Considering we live at some of the most smug coordinates on the planet, I wouldn't be surprised if people jump up and down and demand investigations into BC Hydro's as well as the municipalities' response times and handling of the situation.

Just seeing people on my feed bitching about the dumbest shit. I'm just sitting here thinking 'there's crews out there probably working split or double shifts in conditions that are still dangerous, spending time away from their families just so you can get your fucking Netflix back?'

Give me a fucking break you ungrateful shits. It could have been worse but I don't think anyone died? People just don't know how to handle reality when they're too busy living in their bubbles. So when real events occur, people literally act like the world is ending.

I dare any of these people to live in Tornado Alley or any tropical country.

Electricity is a hell of a drug

I'll be at a hospital as required by law (assuming I'm not dead, trapped, or on vacation somewhere else), so I'll definitely have power and supplies for a few days.

Id say restoring 400,000+ power in a matter of days is pretty great considering what I've seen out there, no complaints re:hydro from me, only kudos

The average vancouverite is so entitled that they believe they are above being inconvenienced by nature.

Katrina was exactly 10 years ago. I will gladly take the 36 hour inconvenience of not having power at home over having to live through a disaster like that.

I think there are two parts.. Yes the storm was overwhelming and crews take time. BCHydro didn't do a great job on their website.. perhaps they should hire SkinnyPupp. Their twitter freaking useless. I think PR and information wise, they can be slicker.. considering they hire so many ex TV personalities.

For those who live in detached houses.. get a Generac it is only a couple thousand $s with install and switch over panel.. money well spent.

I know when I think response to minor natural disasters, what immediately comes to my mind as the most important thing is the PR response ...

Maybe people could just suck it the fuck up for a day or two especially considering most of them couldn't wire a junction box let alone do what the hydro workers do in an emergency.

Can't your bill wait until after one of the biggest outages in a long time has been dealt with?

No, but it lets them know where all the outages is are. If you all just sat in your home and no one in the neighbourhood called, it would probably take longer for a response

One woman still in critical condition after being hit by a tree, which is probably Hydro's fault in some way too . Other than that, I don't think I've heard of any serious injuries.

Nope, that's (partly) what the smart meters are for.

Of course, if you're one of those whiny bitches who fought against getting a smart meter, you deserve to be the very last one they turn back on.

It's definitely a reminder to us all that we should be prepared for emergencies. Stock up on water. Make sure you have flashlights and batteries. Also, make sure you have sufficient gas in your vehicle.

Did this ^

I was actually surprisingly prepared for this.

Woke up, moved cars away from everything in case Shit started falling, charged phones in the cars, pulled out a book and had a great BBQ dinner.

It sucked that I bought a ps4 just before the power went out but it was nice to have a less connected day and it was convenient that I was already well stocked up on supplies. But I guess that's the difference between me having a slightly inconvenient day and those who didn't have food/bottle water/cooking arrangements

It is an eye opener for sure but I doubt many will actually prepare, most will talk about it and forget shortly after and bitch the next time when they are not prepared again.

Sure is going to suck for all the anti-gmo, anti-processed food, anti-car, anti-bottled water people around here

I'm seeing this trend on the West Coast when it comes to how people react to acts of nature disrupting their lives.

Do you remember that snowstorm back in 2008? I remember seeing people running to Canadian Tire and other hardware stores to buy snow shovels.

Friends who lived on the East Coast kept making jokes about people on the south coast of B.C.

Are some people either A) completely unprepared for freak weather related events and react to situations after the incident or B) live their lives as usual without thinking about preparations?

The kind of people who are completely unprepared for anything and run to the store are the same ones that don't bother to check and see that said snow will melt the next day.

I think it is both A AND B.. maybe they think doing yoga poses will able to will some power into their sockets. or their Arc'teryx jackets will magically cook their food.
