Thanks for the service bulletin. Not sure if you use Shiptime but Canpar/Loomis has paused all service - it's no longer an option. Cheapest is Purolator ground (useless) and next to that is FedEx Express. If you do use Shiptime regularly, call in and try to get a better FedEx Express rate.

Purolator Express is rebranded Canada Post Xpresspost btw.

The cost of shipping via Air vs ground is pretty nuts. For ref, a 50/40/40 box to Red Deer via Canpar was $40. FedEx Economy (Air) is $89. We're comping most of the surcharge, but I expect to hear from a lot of customers in QC.

Talked to my regular Loomis driver and he said they have 25 shipping containers full of stuff waiting to go to the interior. They'll only take shipments going within the lower mainland or the island.

I wrongfully assumed that some couriers would take the emergency (no PCR test required) US route to avoid shipment congestion. Guess I was wrong but if I was in charge that’s what I’d be doing to separate myself from the competition.

I bet if one of the big three offered this option at no extra charge they’d be in good position to steal some major accounts from the competition. Short term pain for long term gain as extra costs would be incurred until the roads are back to normal but I’d be pitching the idea.

twitchyzero 11-18-2021 07:41 PM

i doubt it's that straightforward to just detour across the border twice with existing terms of their contract (paying duty, driver's extended health insurance in the US, road side assistance, extra fuel to route through osoyoos etc)

Loss and devastation are everywhere in the Sumas Prairie. We are really glad for the first responders and volunteers who put their lives on the line to ensure human life was not lost this week.
It’s being reported that 50% of dairy, poultry and eggs produced in the region are impacted by the floodwaters. Farm equipment and barns are now contaminated as the water is toxic with dead animals, animal waste, flooded septic tanks and a variety of dangerous waste. The supply of locally-grown vegetables from the area are now floating in the toxic flood waters. Milk from the cows, even those not in the flood area, is being dumped as it can’t be transported past the landslides. The hay and feed from the flooded farms have been lost.
All of this toxic water must go somewhere, so it is being pumped into the Vedder Canal and the Fraser River to save human lives. The impact on wildlife including Fraser salmon, sturgeon and eulachon, to name a few, will be felt for years to come.

So is there no chance of a gas shortage out here anytime soon?

Hondaracer 11-19-2021 08:53 AM

Doesn’t all the actual gasoline come from the states

as long as they get #1 and #3 up, connect to rest of Canada, limit the traffic to essential travels only, which we have done it for a year anyway.
Get those toilet papers rolling in again, everyone's happy.

The entire coquihala was built In 20 months. Over under how long it takes to repair a single digit percentage of it? Lol 4?

Is it just beucracy these days that slows things down or the govt. isn’t able to just throw money at certain things anymore

What an ignorant statement...you think if a wall of your house collapsed you can just take the time it built to take the entire house, divide that by the area affected, and have a realistic timeline?

The entire Coquihalla may have been built in 20 months, but there was at least 4 times that of planning and pre-investigation work to do geotechnical investigations and remediation, environmental assessments, and whatever else.

Case in point, the Patullo replacement? They started work on that 4 years ago.

Bureaucracy in infrastructure projects appears in things like costs overrun because contractors know they can milk the government for OT and mileage, not because someone is playing candy crush on their phone while not approving drawings. And with the entire province sitting in front of their computers with their pitchforks by their side just looking to blame the government for "bureaucracy", you can bet your ass they're not twiddling their thumbs with this. Sure you can slap a road back together in a week, but it doesn't take an engineer to figure out who you're going to blame when the entire thing shifts a meter in a week because the public demanded they build a road without doing slope stabilizations.

Hondaracer 11-19-2021 03:21 PM

If a wall collapsed in my house and I had a virtually unlimited budget, absolutely.

As with anything you over engineer the replacement portions to never be effected by wash outs again. These are small sections to replace not massive stretches.

The history of the coquihalla reflects that where there’s a will, there’s a way. Bennet said the highway needed to be completed for expo and suddenly thousands of peices of machinery were working 24/7 to fufill that goal.

You think this would take “months” in a country like China, or even the USA for that matter? Highly doubtful.

Ah, yes, I forgot that the government has unlimited budget. Well, our worries are unfounded then!

30L is a half a tank for me, that's more than enough for a week and what I normally pump anyway.

I assume the pump will be programed to not pump more than 30l per transaction? what's stopping me from just swapping again for another 30?

whitev70r 11-19-2021 03:35 PM

^ just common sense of morality. Listen to Horgan ... do onto others as you wish done onto you. I know some will and some won't but hopefully, the majority will and everyone will have enough.

But get ready for a big price jump!

I'm sure 30 per visit is more than enough for most people/

We had record gas sales for the last 2 days and we ran out of regular. I think the main problem is the delivery company is swamped with orders.

Even with an unlimited budget could they get even get enough machines and workers to do it faster?

Hondaracer 11-19-2021 03:57 PM

There are thousands of machines all along the highway building the pipeline. This is no exaggeration. Right around where the wash outs have happened I know for certain there are
More than enough excavators, bulldozers, etc. they could contract out.the machinery is already there.

And it’s not like anything is happening with the pipeline until this is corrected

68style 11-19-2021 04:02 PM

It's a bit more intricate than that... like... someone else has contracted that piece of equipment... how do you determine which costs are theirs and which are the new project... anything for government of any significance has to go out for tender for bids to make it a fair process, can't just pick whatever is easiest at any given moment.

It's very very very complicated. I'm sure they wish they could just commandeer equipment, but it simply doesn't work that way. ESPECIALLY if the federal side is involved.

Hondaracer 11-19-2021 04:11 PM

Well yea, when it comes to Turd, the more the bureaucracy the better
