FYI, it'll take a LONG time to get approval. US is probably very very hard to get. if it was easy, people wouldn't have to swim across or be an illegal immigrant.

thanks for the replies guys. | What kind of relatives? That can sometimes be useful.
Alternatively, perhaps you can arrange for a job in the US. While working there temporarily you could probably apply for more permanent citizenship.

The only way to quickly attain a foothold in the USA is if you hold a professional degree (e.g. doctor, pharmacist, lawyer, scientist etc.) that is declared on the TN-Visa list (wikipedia this). Once you have proof of your degree, find and land a job, and then bring the job offer letter to the border and apply for a TN Visa, which is good for 3 years before renewal. If you do not have a good job, you can also apply to be an investor -- you must show you have about $150,000? USD to invest in a business, and show them your past history of entrepreneurship. I don't know the exact details about this route, but a close friend of mine did this. The only drawback of this method is that you will spend thousands of dollars on legal fees to process the papers properly (any errors will set you back months and months).

i was thinking of asking my work to transfer me to the US region. ive yet to ask on monday. | It's not quite as simple as transferring to another country. Like achaim has mentioned, you'll need a work visa to even be able to start working there. The Americans don't take to kindly to foreigners taking their jobs.
If you don't mind me asking, what line of work are you in? How many years of experience and what education do you have? Will your company be willing to sponsor you?
