Well let's put it this way - going to sponsors like Advance Motorsport will be cheaper than Costco, and they have more of a selection. Costco listed tires for $200+ for me (Michelin X-Ice Xi2) and Advance got me WS60's more than $50 cheaper - and could've gotten me the same Michelin's for that price if I wanted them to. Plus Costco has very small selection, pretty much Michelin and BFGoodrich only. Snow tires are going to be expensive, no matter what size, but Michelins tend to be the most expensive (besides Nokian) because they're seen as "premium" tires. I'm a big fan of Bridgestone myself... comparable performance for cheaper.

Plus they're more likely to not scratch your wheels when mounting because they're used to bigger wheels/nicer wheels.

Heck if you want to do it the US (Tire Rack or Discount Tire Direct) will be even cheaper, if you ship to Point Roberts.

Check if steelies will fit your brakes first. If not, then go OEM or aftermarket for alloys.

Man, finding a proper set of staggered tires for your car in 17" is hard, haha. Tire Rack has no matching sets... You could probably mix and match and come out OK, or go narrower for all four - the second method is preferred.

why go staggered?

chances are, u will wear out either the front or the rear pair faster especially for snow tires.

if u get all 4 the same, u can at least rotate the tires to even the wear.

Just going by Tire Rack's recommended sizes, which wanted to go staggered. I can find tires (for kaycee) in either sizes in sets of 4 just fine, but not both due to no models being made in both sizes.

Which is why I recommended going narrower (225/50R17).

I'm looking for winter tires and rims but i really have no idea what im looking for. All I know about winter tires is that there are some "popular" ones like X-ice and Blizzak.

So far I've found rims: http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brows...teel%2BRim.jsp

What kind of winter tires should i be getting? Where is the best/cheapest place to get them? Tirerack or local. If so from Tirerack, how much will it cost in taxes and fees to bring it over the border on a day trip.

My stock wheels/tires: 16" x 6.5", 205/55R16

TIA

Xice and Blizzak are good mid-end tires. General Altimax Arctic and Goodyear Nordic are popular for the more affordable lower end tires.

The hankook iPike are supposedly very good according to my tire mounting guy.

Tire Rack/Discount Tire will be cheaper... if you ship to Point Roberts, you just pay GST and PST on the price not including shipping.

Right now the General Altimax Arctic is $78 each from Tire Rack, it's quite a good tire from what I hear. The new Continental Extreme Winter Contact is $90, and it's supposed to be better than the Xi2 and WS60.

Where is tirerack anyways? Is it like a normal chain store down there? I was thinking if it was I could just order and drive down there, if its in Blaine or something.

yesterday was the 1st time in my life using winter tires (yokohama iceguard) and WOW, i cannot believe the difference in grip.

my beater (1990 EF Dx hatch) has no p/s and just turning the wheel on the spot was super easy. previous to this i had falken ziex ze912's on the car (with which i was able to get thru last year's winter) and i never realised how poor the traction became with the colder weather. the drive to and from work yesterday was awesome. the car felt like it was pulling (despite being a stock D15B lol).

Haha. My GF said the same thing after I installed her snowies on Tuesday. She could feel the water evacuating through the tread on road grooves w/ 2" of water, instead of feeling like she was skimming/hydroplaning over it. It's her first time with dedicated snowies also.

Her stock tire size is 205/55/16 and I got her into a narrower 15" with more sidewall. Her only complaint was the noticeable sidewall flex compared to the 55 series. She drives fairly hard so I made a point of taking her out late at night, so she could push the car a bit and see how the new rubber reacted differently. Better to know the limits beforehand.

very evident today. side by side with an mpv van. red light turns red, we both slam on the brakes, i brake before the line, the mpv van slides thru the intersection a car length past the cross walk on the other side of the intersection.

she then decided to reverse back thru that 1 car length, thru the intersection, all the way back beside my car... hahahaha burning tire rubber sure smells distinct.

Last night, Marine Drive just past Cambie had a HUGE puddle going westbound.

I was looking forward to driving through it on my way home from a friend's place in Burnaby, but it drained by the time I was heading back.
