| MBNA Credit Card - cash back on gas/groceries http://creditcards.redflagdeals.com/...Platinum-Plus/
Ok, my friend suggested for me to sign up for this card. The benefits look pretty good and I need a card that can reward me for gas and have no fees. I drive for work on a daily basis and could use the benefits.
What do y'all think? Any of you have this? Any strings?
MBNA Smart Cash Platinum PlusŪ Credit Card
* Get 5% cash back on net gas and grocery purchases for the first 6 months
* Get 3% cash back on net gas and grocery purchases thereafter
* Get 1% cash back for all other net retail purchases

Read the fine-print. Any stipulations, if not, go for it.

Don't go for it. The card itself is fine, but I had a UBC Platinum Plus with them and they kept adding random protection crap (which I had to pay for) that I had to keep calling back and telling them to stop and credit me back. They also like to call you and mail you alot. One could call them and ask to be off all their mailling and phone lists, but I was fed up with their service and it wasn't as beneficial for my gas/groceries as my RBC Starbucks Duetto Visa (cash back for coffeeeee ) or my Citi Canada Petro-Canada MasterCard (5 or 7 cents off per litre...I forget exactly how much), so I just recently cancelled the MBNA.
Your mileage may vary, but I'd rather deal with a bank with a bigger presence here or with better benefits.

No problem. I think that the bottom line comes down to dealing with reputable organizations with good histories. CIBC might be the exception as my buddy had crap service and just general crap with his Visa.

hey! i applied for this card not too long ago.
the only drawback is that MBNA may cancel this card abruptly (and possibly soon) like they did with the starwood card.
MBNA is hit or miss. its highly praised for its great rewards but sometimes people say they get junk mail from them.
CIBC dividends card is average. you dont even get 1% till after you spend 3k, which to most people isnt a big deal but if you spend little then its not a very good card. also SG said the money back maxed is 5k a year but i believe its only $300, which would mean you've spent roughly 30k in a year.
personally i hate cibc because their customer service is so bad. sometimes i call their 24h line before wasting my time going into a branch if i have to get something done, and their knowledge is not consistent with the branch tellers. i've had this happen at least 3 times, all 3 times i pretty much flipped out at the branch because all they said was they werent responsible for the info given by the phone reps. they should hold themselves responsible as a company, not as a branch. i dont know if TD is any better but since i do my trading through waterhouse (which has GREAT phone customer service), im switching my checkings/savings there.
whoops, didnt mean to turn this into a CIBC rant but i absolutely hate them and will switch over after the new year.

TD has been pretty good to me. BMO the best so far, no issues, no need to call them. CITI is so-so, I hear, but I haven't had the need to call them really. Not yet.

if you need something for gas, get the citi-petro mastercard. i use it only for gas and its 2c off per liter at petro canada only of course. you also get points that you can redeem to buy those gas cards that give you 5c off per liter. the mastercard used to be 7c off but they removed the 5c since no other gas stations were offering that deal.

Horrendous issues with services usually.
For CHQ accounts for day to day transaction, just deal with a Credit Union.

If we're just looking at credit cards, BMO and RBC are the only ones that I haven't had an issue yet. I don't know about their other services as I don't do daily banking with them, so can't say anything about that. Personally, I'd feel more secure banking or, uh, credit card-ing with a chartered bank rather than a credit union. Posted via RS Mobile |
