Porsches that appreciate
 

I'm in the market for a used car and was thinking of picking up a Porsche. I'm still very much in the learning process, and I was told that some Porsches actually appreciate instead of depreciate. I think it was a certain generation/model of the air-cooled 911s?

Can anyone could provide me with a bit more details as to which models/trims I should be looking at?

not really know porsches that much, but the carrera GT will probably appreciate

You'd be looking at the 911's I'd assume,
and you really have two choices the 930 and the 993 older ones aren't as desirable unless it's a special model like the 2.7 RS
993's hold their value very well, as opposed to 996's and 997's
however you'd be looking at turbos/gt2s/other higher models
but buying a c2/c2s/c4s etc. is not a bad bet as their value won't drop too much and they're a decent daily driver with good reliability
930's are frankly expensive for what they offer.
but a turbo is very desirable

This really depends on your budget. 1981 - 1986 911 are pretty good and reliable then I would move to the 993s as they are very nice but much higher in value and holding strong. Boxsters and Caymans are great too. Myself and a bunch of buddies are driving these right now.

993 Turbo/Turbo S, CGT, 930 Turbo's, 356, if you get a good vehicle for a good deal, someone may be willing to give you more than you paid for it due to them really wanting a mint vehicle, but in terms of appreciating to get a return on your investment, your in the wrong field, vehicles are meant to be driven and enjoyed, you will always spend more money on them than you will ever get back from them, invest your money another way and enjoy the Porsche you bought.

993 turbo/turbo S, 993 Carrera 4s/2s are the ones that are going up in price. 5 yrs ago, you could pick up a 993 turbo for $50-$70K. Now, $65-$100K. 993 Turbo S goes for $120K+. 996s including Turbos are dirt cheap now.....the only 996s that are holding some value are GT2s and GT3s. But even Porsche 996 GT cars are worth less than 50% when new, but I think they have pretty muched bottomed out. 997s MK1 is really coming down in price....you can buy an 07 turbo from the US landed in BC for approx. $85K.

^ the 911 in the bad boys movie is a 964 Turbo....holding value, but not really increasing....now the 964 turbo S...that is worth big money

If you can find a good deal on a 356, go for that over any other "affordable" Porsche. Out of all the models available (barring the 959), it's probably the one model out there that's almost guaranteed to fetch you some extra cash at the end of the day.

I bit the bullet and bought a 996 cheap out of the States for less than the price of most used Boxsters up here.

.. I should add there's a 930 in Kelowna for sale for $28k. Probably the cheapest you'll ever find one. I suppose I could go check it out for someone serious.

if u want a more refined, modern air cooled car, 993 is your best bet. the turbo and 4S model being very very desirable cars.

they still have power steering, a/c and stuff modern cars should have.. but they are also quite un refined with control layouts.. such as the door handles, climate controls.. and a trademark, the pedals coming out of the floor.

otherwise, finding a well kept clean example, would be a good driver, as these cars are virtually bullet proof if driven every day and well looked after with regular maintenance.

the model before 993, the 964 is not bad. keeps the classic 911 look but with a much more cleaner looking body. they are problem prone however.. and quite costly to fix.

the pre 964 911's arent everyday drivers in today's standards. spartan interiors, manual steering, long throw gear box, and all the sorts of rawness that cars dont offer nowadays. theyre much lighter cars compared to the new cars, and are worlds nimbler and more thrilling to drive. makes owning a 911 feel.. "special" every drive would be a special ocassion. older cars provide feelings and sounds the new watercooled cars can never make.

pre 89' 911s are fine and are quite bullet proof if also well looked after.. some cars went over 500k kms without engine rebuilds.. they do leak some oil however.

if you want a 911, and have one that feels special, and keeps going up in value.. get an aircooled car. a 930 turbo, 911SC , 993 C4S, 993 Turbo are sure bets.
