| Ford to replace Crown Vic with new police car http://communities.canada.com/drivin...olice-car.aspx Quote: Not to be outgunned by GM's plan to bring back the Caprice for police duty, Ford said Friday it will replace the dinosaur-era Crown Victoria for use as a police car in 2011.
Details are slim, but Ford says it will develop an all-new police interceptor to replace the aging Crown Victoria law enforcement vehicle lineup in 2011.
The car could be based off the Ford Taurus, which itself is based off a Volvo plaftform. But given the short turnaround time, speculation is that the new police cruiser could be based off the rear-drive Ford Falcon currently sold in Australia and pictured here. Expect the car to receive the 365 hp ecoboost engine currently sold in the Ford Taurus SHO.
Ford sells 45,000 police vehicles each year in the United States, or about 75 percent of the total. It will end production of the Crown Victoria in late 2011. The automaker expects no interruptions of production as the replacement for the Crown Victoria is brought on in 2011, it said. Ford plans to unveil the new model and specifications in the first quarter of 2010. |

I like the Falcon, but it's hard to see where it would fit when Ford already has the Fusion and Taurus sedans to choose from

I can't see the VPD getting new car anytime soon.... Quote:
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A plan that would have seen emergency response times reduced in Vancouver will be delayed, as the police force shrinks over the next two years. The Vancouver Police Department has agreed to cut its budget because of the cash-flow problem being dealt with at City Hall.
In all 35 officers will be lost, 16 positions are already vacant and the remainder will be cut by the end of next year. Twenty unstaffed civilian spots will not be filled. No layoffs have been announced but positions will disappear through attrition.
Deputy Chief Constable Bob Rolls says the cut will delay the promised implementation of the VPD's roving Metro teams. "These teams were approved by council based on the operational review. Their purpose was to reduce response times across the city by placing additional members on the road during peak periods."
Rolls says those teams would have cut the VPD's response time for priority-one calls by 45 seconds. The move is expected to shave $2.4 million off the force's budget next year. Police say Olympic security will not be affected.
The Vancouver Fire Department is facing cuts too. Firefighters Union president Gord Ditchborn has seen some preliminary figures. "I've been told a $2.7 million projected budget cut, which would equate to about 16 full-time positions."
Ditchborn says a rescue truck will also likely be pulled out of service. He says he is not fear mongering when he says the cuts will affect safety.
The budget shortfall is also hitting Vancouver City Hall pretty hard. Staff will brief council on Tuesday, on strategies for closing a $60 million budget gap. Mayor Gregor Robertson tells News1130 the city is trying to find a balance. "We'll see slight adjustments in all departments across the city, but not very many that I think people will notice in their day-to-day lives or in their neighborhoods."
In a statement released Friday afternoon, the city says that could include the elimination of nearly 160 full-time positions. Vancouver Park Board is also debating program and service changes to save money.

do we need cop cars with supercar power? Most of them don't see any high speed chasing action anyway... | Uh, what? The current interceptor comes from the factory set up the way they are. Which is beefed up suspension and brakes, very little additional power - current Crown Vics move slower than the speed of smell - and some extra electrical work.
They don't need supercar performance, but it's completely justifiable to outfit them with cars capable of
A: keeping up with and overtaking regular cars on the highway.
and B: Getting them to the scene of an emergency in good time.
It's not like they pay full price for them. As mentioned in the article, they sell 45000 of the things in the states alone, that kind of volume gets you one hell of a fleet discount.

At least with a simple V8 parts are cheap and they are available everywhere. Turbo V6 cruiser? How many turbos do you intend to go through in a year?
Last time I checked OPEC hasn't introduced a fleet pricing yet, and police mechanics cost more than the mechanic that installed your muffler crooked. So more complicated + powerful + unreliable machinery = more money out of our fucking pocket. And we probably will hear about another RCMP officer charged of DUI in a 365HP company car veering into someone's house coz he had a few servings of wine during lunch.
The other extreme is this:
You want cheap policing? Try one of these:
As it stands the Crown Vic does 0-60mph in 10+ seconds, and it turns no better than the luxury cruiser going to Alaska (funny enough the Prius and the Versa will both outrun the crown vic anywhere under 100km/h). Are you suggesting that giving them 365BHP and a 1.0G cornering capability is going to reduce our crimes now?
