whats with all the american cars flooding the used car market?

im looking to buy a used car w/ low kms . i went on craigslist and a few used car dealerships. almost half the ones i found are from the states. they look good and some have transferable factory warranty. carfax comes out ok. should i trust it?

Weak US dollar.

Make sure you find out as much of the history as possible and do a 3rd party inspection (ie. BCAA).

yup

US cars are generally cheaper. with the combo of a weak USD to strong CAD, there will be a lot more cars coming here!

couple years ago when it was below par, the canadian customs office would be flooded with importers, and transporters.

3rd party inspection for sure and have Carproof - Carproof is the only reliable source out of the 3.

Make sure the factory warrenty will be valid here. I've heard of a lot of dealerships not honering the warrenty's on US vehicles.

A CarFax/Proof is ok, but it's better to spend your money on getting it checked out by a mechanic you trust.

Reports only know what is reported to them. If you screw up your alignment in an accident worth $2K, are you gonna let ICBC handle that one? Didn't think so...

The fact that the market for cars, used or new, in the US is low means more available for export.

Flood damaged cars are not eligible for export. Even if a few got through, Katrina was in '05 - just buy something newer.

Easy, move the car between a few states (eg Nevada), because the databases don't get updated instantaneously, the car title can be washed clean. When you see cars moving back and forth between states over a short span of time, be aware.

Also once in Canada, people move the car to Ab first, then to BC.. is another trick.. so that's another red flag.

If cars are too cheap to be true, there are always a reason.

I remember reading years back that either Utah or Arizona in the US are red flag states. Something about cars from there not requiring to have full title disclosure. If your car from another state has a bad title or accident, registering it in Utah or Arizona can conceal or wipe that history out somehow... don't quote me on that though. Similar situation with Alberta in Canada I believe.

What about cars that were given up for the Cash for Clunkers program? Any chance they could be siphoned off by unscrupulous dealers and importers working together secretly??

All the vehicles had to have their engines destroyed

Quote:
Dealers must replace the oil in the “clunker” with two quarts of sodium silicate solution and run the engine for up to seven minutes, permanently disabling it, according to rules released today by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in Washington.

That being said ,most of those vehicles are in decent shape, just pigs on gas.If the dealer didn't disable the engine, they are still okay vehicles, unlike Katrina vehicles .

+1.

Add Texas and Florida to the list as well.

Sorry, Texas rings a bell now that you bring it up. I think Utah and Arizona are safe.

So cool, gotta see if I can find a video of them destroying an engine with this stuff...

Apparently it's also used as a makeshift fix for head gasket leaks?
