I've heard the same from a friend who worked there. First few months was all rainbows and smiles. Then as time sets in, it was just a nightmare.

In any case, me being a parts guy myself, congrats! If you like working in the auto industry but not nesccesarily with fixing cars, parts is a great department. It's a bit overwhelming at first with so many numbers but you'll get used to it. My first month I literally had numbers floating in my mind when I would sleep. Now it's a breeze and it's a lot of fun.

Well, first official day of work! i just missed their order of shop shirts so i had to sport my own Revscene shirt today =P

Anyhow, they've given me a couple of tshirts to sport the Brian Jessel BMW logo for now, to tie me til either they place an order (in a few weeks, which i may be moved into parts officially) but i really like doing shipping for now. the crew is awesome! I guess the one in charge of shipping (i guess we call her the shipping manager) has taken the time and even stayed late teaching and answering all my dumb questions.

It sounds kinda stupid to some of u guys, but going form small shop, to highly organized big dealership like this is a dream for someone thats slightly OCD. organization is as top as can be, and an efficient system worked out. Parts guys work closely with shipping guys and vice versa. the whole system is just amazing!

I stayed late a bit to learn off of the manager, and she was kind enough to take me under her wing to teach me. I feel a little bad because the other new guy, they threw in like that. while ive been given the chance to learn at a slower pace, without the high traffic pressures.

just very amazed how everything works, how everyone has their part of the job.

its much different coming from a shop, where i did sales, shipping, receiving, parts, payroll, book keeper, mechanic, installer, human resources, janitor at times, inventory stock... so honestly, im having a hard time figuring out what im suppose to do, and what im not suppose to do.

but man, those parts guys are insane, yes its very fast pace, but they RUN!

My learning curve has been very interesting.

Seems like every possibly scenario that can happen, has happened, but in a good way, i get to learn from it. Kinda like those "what if?" situations.

It just amazes me how they keep order in there with soooooo many parts. Every car has different rotors, pads, air filters, oil filters. these are just regular stuff, then u got the custom stuff, body panels, covers, bumpers, GLASS even! then tires, wheels, hoses... the list goes on and on.

and the pace at which the parts guys work at is intense! you got ur tech mechanics blasting in asking for parts, the parts guys running, no... sprinting to get the part for them, while the shipping/receiving guys are constantly getting parts in to put into inventory and stock them back up!

Everyone works in teams, as a system. one kink in the system and bam, everything gets jammed! Just makes u really realized what team work is all about!

Today, i learned about "cores" and "warranties" tommorow, i will absorb what i learned!

hmm, i donno about slacking. ive been in the parts and shipping department.

there isnt even time to slack, everyone is encouraged to take their lunch break because u need that break for food and to recharge.

so far, they have me learning in the shipping department. this is what i do thru the day.

- day starts off for me at 7:30. we get a list of whats coming in for the day. shipping companies drop stuff off for us so the bay is usually packed, and thus u gotta move ur ass to clear room as other shipping companies keep coming in and dropping more stuff off. we are talking about local tire wholesalers, ups, puralator, dhl, greyhound, etc...

- so u get a list like 50 pages long of parts that are suppose to come in, parts on back order, specially ordered parts. we are trying to find them, tick them off the list, seperate where they go in the inventory, all while more couriers drop off more stuff. its endless.

- by noon, everything is seperated and we start putting the packs together. thus like customers place orders, we put them together to either ship out or to drive out for tommorow. we also tag items that have been spoken for, place them seperately. putting packages together for the driver to deliver the next day. we place that on the side for him, and usually he is double checking in the morning when we are unpacking the shipments.

- 2-4pm, couriers come by and pick up the packages we put together for shipping. all through out the day, we are helping the parts guys put their packages together. it might be a customer waiting outside for the part, or it can be the mechanic waiting for the part. there are like 99 million different parts from a little metal clip, to a whole sub frame! all are catalog'd, all have their own part numbers, all are organized so that everyone can find them when need be.

thats why i keep thinking, OMG, thank you for putting me in shipping. this gave me the chance to see and learn how the system works! if they threw me in parts right away, i may be having a mental break down right now. the parts guys have to keep the mechanics happy, the waiting customers happy, and even sales guys that want to throw in some floor mats for the cars. everything must be cleared thru the parts guys first! no free for grabs because that will throw off the inventory!

for anyone else, im sure it will be overwhelming, it still is for me, but im slightly OCD, and thus, the organization is an absolute treat for me.

i just touched upon the warranty and core parts on friday from one of the shippers. im sure every dealership has a similar system, but now i really really really really do understand why parts and shippers work so closely and organized. i cant even imagine what the service side is like. ppl coming in, booking appointments, having the right tech work on what. to me, it looks like a football play, but you are only giving 1 down to get the touchdown.

then you got all the internals, the valets, lot staff, just wow! I dont see many slackers, but what i do see sometimes is everyone waiting on 1 guy to finish so that the rest can move. u are only as fast as ur slowest member. and i dont plan on being the slowest, nor be just an individual, but a team player.

Im just happy to be there, my first week and everyone's been so well received and nice to me. I was expecting marlene (my current buddy learning partner) to be killing me right now from my endless questions. thank god for her patience.

no shame in that. everyone started somewhere. you can always swing on by the shipping/receiving area and ask one of the guys who i am.

no shame, in a big company, every person counts in order to make efficiency, EVERY.
