check around on nasioc.com. But when buying a used car there are always things to look out for, but STIs in particular it's almost impossible to find one that hasn't been driven hard. So look for one that isn't modded, that or if it is less engine mods would be better. Look for signs that the engine is running rich (on top of the exhaust tip on the back bumper...its usually stained). Just look out for those things and read up on them. Good luck!

I have an 07 there isnt major problems straight outta factory except that the factory tune is very very bad. I drove the car for abit with a stock tune it was very random with hesitation issues and sometimes boost spikes!!! that was very bad but a simple way to fix it is a cobb accessport stage 1 flash it will solve all that problem plus give you a few more hp =)

I actually would be worried if they drove the car hard with a stock tune.. but that is very hard to tell... Good Luck

I guess it's a matter of opinion but for the prices i'm seeing in the used car market for 06/07's, I'd personally pay that little extra for a new 09/10 but maybe that's just cause I like the hatch better

its cause your looking at them used here...it's ridiculous. $35k+ for an 06/07. You can get them for $18-23k in the states.

Based off of consumer reports, 07s have a terrible fuel system.

Starting from 08, it gets MUCH better overall for all categories.

Ok, now that I'm not on my phone I can give a better answer. 07's are fine but I would recommend as a first mod reflashing the ECU with the Cobb accessport. I believe that the tranny as well as the turbo for the 07's are better. However, the ECU was tuned crappy from the factory as it was meant to comply with LEV2 regulations. At times it may run lean under heavy driving/mods. All you need to do is reflash and the car should be awesome.

One thing that may be tough is finding a good example that hasn't been beaten to heck by the previous owner or modded poorly. Other than that, good luck and all the best whether you buy it or not...

P.S. NASIOC is a good general site, but do some reading on iwsti.com as well...

What the hell are people doing to thier 07's thats making them blow up? Shouldn't 07's be just fine w/ a respectable tune? Interesting.

www.nasioc.com
www.iwsti.com

search for broken ringland, blown motor, broken oil pick up to name a few.
majority of the results will point towards 07+, including 08 and 09 sti too
its not because of bad gas, its not because of bad maintenance,
its not because of bad driver, its not the owners fault.

be it stock tune or a after market tune, it will blow up no matter what. it's really down to, if ur lucky or not.
oh and again recent year sti have issues with oil pick up tubes vibrating and falling apart, this seems to happen mostly to 07+ cars, so........ go figure,
it seems like the older year model sti seems better off.

I am also looking to replace my current car with a 2010 STI and this ring land problem is making me think twice about my decision. (although apparently subbie revised the tune on the 2010 to solve the issue, but i dont think that is the problem since ppl are having issues with a stock tune)

However, most of the reported problems are bias to american market and also appears that even bone stock STI owners are having issues claiming the blown motor under the warranty from the american dealerships...

My question is, any local wrx/sti owners have this issue and how are the dealerships here deal with this particular problem?

I don't have this problem but TBH, the car has a 5 year drivetrain warranty. If this was as serious as reported you would see an actual recall.

ya i'm in agreement with you somewhat, it could very well be that the problem is blown out of proportion..

I guess i'll wait to see reports of 2010 failure on nasioc before i make my decision...
