Need new phone, help me select!!!

Here is my criteria:
1) must have touch screen qwerty or physical qwerty board.
2) no iphones or blackberry ( i am poor and cant afford data plan)
3)can be a smart phone but prefer not to unless its very easy to use . I dont plan to play with upgrading ROM and apps.
4) must not be one of the physical qwerty cheap rogers phone from LG or samsung that has a tiny ass screen.
5) must look like a girly phone.

I have a few choice myself
1) LG prada, prada II..etc............girls die for the prada name
2) LG viewty and viewty smart......very nice physical appearance
3)nokia 5800 expressmusic......very high on the list because Roger's offered HUP with 3yr renew contract for my gf
4)HTC magic ( a white one).....wonder if this virtual keyboard is good for texting
Just want to know what you guys think?

+Kardboard+ 11-24-2009 02:53 PM

You can't afford a data plan but want a smartphone? :p Just teasing. The white Magic is a good choice, IMHO, but there's the LG Eve too that is affordable. darthchilli says it's crap, but on paper it looks pretty decent for a cheap "webphone." Don't go for the 5800, the onscreen QWERTY will drive you batty.

nokia 5530 pink..super girl imo

Get the N97 or N900.

Wait.... How much do you plan on spending?

wasabisashimi 11-26-2009 10:14 AM

$350-$400 max

jurson 11-26-2009 10:41 AM

i actually think the touch screen works pretty well..and wifi is fast on this compared to other phones i used..

WELL MAIN POINT IS...i'll sell you mine for a good deal =P..9.5/10 condition LOL

Out of your choices, I'd get the Magic (or Dream if you prefer a hardware qwerty). Using a smartphone without a data plan is a waste of a smart phone, but everything else in your list sucks.

The 5800 express is ok, but Android > Symbian
Symbian is outdated and can no longer compete, and Nokia finally realized this (Maemo)

PS: I don't know if things have improved lately, but from my past experiences, LG phones are crap. They are always so buggy.

You can always get a unlocked iphone, so you don't have to use the data plan.

tiger_handheld 11-27-2009 11:33 AM

because you said no to blackberry!

jurson 11-27-2009 11:42 AM

I still say E71 or the new E72 that came out. but i guess it ultimately depends on what you're gonna do with ur phone

ae101 11-27-2009 01:04 PM

sony X1 i really like that phone & its only $360 with rogers or i little bit more if u buy u it unlock already at a asian phone store

Tim Budong 11-27-2009 01:12 PM

5530 has a very good touchscreen for a nokia. Should consider that. But for 400, there's really not much out there.

As for android vs symbian...the droid OS is not completely wonderful and all better, u see not too many open apps for the phone atm vs symbian. S60 has a very complete set of apps for smartphones too.

saw a telus flyer that they carry the new LG chocolate BL40. That looks girly enough.

Hopefully it is a GSM phone not CDMA.

Narrowed the list down to
1)Vodafone Magic white
2)Nokia 5530
3)LG chocolate BL40
4)LG prada II

Only prada II has a physical qwerty. So out of the top 3 choices, which company has the best touch screen keyboard for texting...etc. (i played with iphone and liked the touch screen keyboard on that, and it kinda sets standard)

i used the x1 for a bit and didn't really like it. i guess i was expecting more from it.

The BL40 is indeed HSPA.

The iPhone has a capacitive touch screen, and if that's what you like, then that rules out the Nokia 5530 (resistive touch screen).

I still don't know why the Magic is in your list, since you said you wanted hardware qwerty and it's a smart phone (best experienced with a data plan)

Both of the LG phones are "dumb phones", but based on your criteria, I guess your best choice would be Prada II (hardware qwerty). There is no substitute for a physical qwerty.
But don't say I didn't warn you about LG quality.

Tim Budong 12-02-2009 04:59 AM

if u say the iphone keyboard sets the standard, than be prepared to be COMPLETELY disappointed with all the choices you listed.

The magic is a simple phone
the Nokia can almost do all, but i text on t9 mode rather than the qwerty with nokia S60v5

I have no experience with LG, i've been pretty harsh when i give my opinion with LUCKYGOLDSTAR when it comes to them for releasing GARBAGE outside of Korea
