Arrow Lexus LFA: Only 10 coming to Canada

Lexus LFA: Only 150 Lease Cars Coming to U.S.
Published Nov 23, 2009

TORRANCE, California — Lexus confirmed Monday that it will only lease its new LFA supercar to customers in the U.S. and Canada, with a provision to buy the car at the end of the two-year lease.

On the official LFA Web site, Lexus said it was "targeting to offer the base LFA" at 37.5 million yen — around $420,000 at current exchange rates — with any customization charges added to the price.

Lexus began accepting "purchase applications" in October. LFA production begins in December 2010 at Toyota's Motomachi plant in Japan. Cars will be hand-built at the rate of 20 per month for 25 months, with total production limited to 500 cars.

A Lexus spokesman told Inside Line only 150 cars will be coming to the U.S. Previously, Lexus said only 10 LFAs will be available to Canadian customers. Lexus will only be offering the lease-only program in North America.

In an interview with Automotive News, Lexus executive Brian Smith said no LFA will be built until it is ordered.

A story on the Canadian site wheels.ca said the LFA lease deal could cost up to $10,000 a month, including interest, taxes and a hefty insurance premium. Lessees will have a purchase option at the end of the lease.

The wheels.ca story said the lease deal was intended to squelch speculators. It quoted Toyota Canada spokesperson Sandy Di Felice as saying, "What happens with hot new supercars like the LFA is that brokers will purchase them and flip them on Web sites like eBay. You don't want the brand devalued because people are playing silly buggers."

Does that make a person who is willing to spend $10,000 a month on a lease car the real "silly bugger"? — Paul Lienert, Correspondent

I think it's smart of Lexus to do a "Lease only" type of ordeal. That way people can't resell the car for a higher price etc etc

So you can only lease the car?

$10000/mo leasing a $400,000 car seems like a good deal, lol

It's richmond, some mainlander is bound to wrap it around a pole. I also hope they be handicapped for live or become a vegetable. Otherwise engulfed in flames while surviving with all the skin recieving 3rd degree burns would be sufficient too.

I wouldn't buy a LF-A even if I won the Lotto. Probably get a R8 or Used Gallardo and invest the rest in realestate :P

Actually no, Mainlander with lot of money would probably go buy Ferrari/Lambo instead, the Lexus show off factor not as high as the european brands. I suspect out of those 10 in Canada, at least a few will end up on some Japanese millionaire's hang.

Interesting. I remember from the "Who Killed the Electric Car" documentry the GM EV1 was lease only. GM took them all back with no option for owners to buy them.

I don't know about that, when I lived in Vancouver recently, I saw Ferrari and Lambo everyday...so many Bentleys and Aston Martins as well.

The show off factor of LFA would be higher than F430 or Gallardo.

If a person wants to show off their money, they would be doing it wrong with the LFA,the smart ones will save alot of money and just buy the Lambo or ferrari for the prestige of owning one.

Everyone knows what a Lambo,Ferrari or Rolls Royce is,even the people that have no clue about cars know what they are,but a person with no car knowledge will just think the LFA is just "another" lexus, regardless of how big the price tag is.

For the price of a new LFA,I would not go near a Lexus showroom,I would be on the hunt for a used Carrera GT or Ferrari F50.
