HELP ME CHOOSE A PHONE! Iphone vs bbery

Hey guys, so i've decided to go to Bell and start up a new plan. It's on my dad's corporate plan for extended family members and it looks attractive. Anyways, I have to pick a phone that I will be using for 3 years.

I will be mostly calling/talking and less texting. I currently have the LG rumor (qwerty slide phone) with unlimited texting, but my new plan will only have 250 outgoing so less texting.

I also have no data plan on it so there's not much I can do about that (its expensive). BUT I do have unlimited access to wifi at home, and also at university and my travel distance between these two places is less than 2 minutes.

so.... should I pick the Iphone 3g , Iphone 3gS, or Blackberry Bold 9000? School me on the differences / pros / cons etc!!

TIA

I'm not so sure if you could activate an iphone on bell without data.

Bberry needs data, its core functions rely on data network, bb w/o data is meaningless.

But I'll probably say the same for iphone. What's good to have these capable phones if you don't have the adequate service to go with it?

I'd say, ask your dad to give CSR a call. Tell them that you would like to add some data pack on. Try it for a couple of days to see if you really need it. Otherwise, any phone, smart or dumb is really the same for you. As you just talk with it.

Trust me, I can't even imagine life without data on my cell anymore. It's like crack.

if you don't have access to data, the minute you said wi-fi, the choice was pretty evident. go with the iphone, either 3g or 3gs, whichever you can find/afford.

as Hehe said, a BB without data is useless pretty much. the iphone's web capabilities are way better than the BB.

iphone
go to telus if you're choosing a network with the new system

greendb7 11-26-2009 01:32 AM

I was gonna say Blackberry, cuz I'm a heavy supporter of Blackberry's and I think they're amazing, but with what you described, I think you're better off with an Iphone..
Blackberry's is all about texting and BBM'ing, hence the qwerty keyboard
this coming from a person who hates Iphones

tonyvu 11-26-2009 09:50 AM

i've been always a supporter of blackberries because i love BBM, but revently i've been playing with most of my buddies iphones and it kinda makes me want one now lol.

simply i see it this way, if you text and browse like a buisness man then get a blackberry, but if you like to browse with more options then get an iphone and besides its got like a shit load of Apps. to pass the time away.

I just talked to a Bell representive and apparently, if I pay 10$ per month I could get unlimited mobile browsing which will allow me to use blackberry messenger and also windows live messenger on the blackberry... But that's all I know.. What else can this 10$/month unlimited mobile browsing give me on the blackberry OR on the iphone? This isn't a data add on right?

TekDragon 11-26-2009 10:22 AM

Just want to point out that if you are doing a HUP, you'll be raped if you don't get data with it. They'll charge you damn near the whole amount for the phone.

G 11-26-2009 10:25 AM

^Whats a HUP? hardware upgrade program? im getting a new phone on new activation for a 3 year contract...but i see where u are going with this. I will need to check with the external telecommunications company for the pricing.....

you sure about this? make sure the rep isn't talking about $10/month for unlimited WAP browsing, cause that's useless with any BB or iphone as far as I'm concerned. get more details and see what they tell you.

I know Rogers offers a plan where you get unlimited IM (MSN, Yahoo!, GTalk), unlimited BBM, and unlimited Facebook for something around that amount per month, but not unlimited mobile browsing.

Ikkaku 11-28-2009 01:23 AM

I believe that's $15 for unlimited BBM and email... not sure about msn and stuff

Here is the transcript for 2 of my live help chat sessions with Bell representatives. From what they say.. 10$ per month = unlimited mobile browsing + BBM + WLM?

Chat 1
Bell Representative: Yes you can access the Internet with Mobile browser for $10/month without a data plan
Me: now would that allow me to use blackberry messenger and windows live messenger (applications on the blackberry) without charging data?
Bell Representative: Yes.
Me: Would I be able to access blackberry messenger and windows live messenger unlimitedly?
Me: or is there a limit
Bell Representative: Yes you can.
Me: okay.
Me: thank you
Bell Representative: There is no limit if you have the Mobile browser for $10/month.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Chat 2
Me: I don't need email or anything else (since I have access to wireless internet 24/7). So is there any feature I could add on that will allow me unlimited access to Blackberry messenger and Windows live messenger?
Bell Representative: You can choose normal plan and add mobile browser along with the plan.
Me: Will mobile browser (10$ feature) allow me to use Blackberry Messenger and Windows Live messenger unlimitedly?
Bell Representative: Yes you can use.

Bell uses the same network. Telus and Bell are "partners" you can sort of say. Telus uses Bell's network on the East and they use Telus network on the West.

I recommend you make sure that the rep you are speaking with is not in India or somewhere overseas as they have no clue what they are talking about half the time.

I pefer the Berry over the iPhone but thats just because I use it for work and the berry is geared more towards that.

If you decided on the iPhone and want to go with Telus

msg me I can get you a iPhone 3g on a 3 year plan new activation for under 10 bucks. yea no typo under $10.00

G 12-02-2009 09:23 PM

Anyone here work for Bell? I am trying to activate a 3 - year voice plan WITH NO DATA and I want to buy the iPhone, but the rep said that you can only buy the iPhone ONLY if you sign up for a contract with DATA plan.... Now on the website it says this:

"Apple iPhone 3GS - $199.95
On a 3 year term when activating a min voice and data plan combination or combo plan requirements of $50 or greater. Bell reserves the right to limit the usage. Out of bundle rates may apply. For new activations. Offer ends November 26th, 2009 "

So now that its December 2nd, would I be able to just purchase the iPhone with just a voice plan? I know that at Fido, Rogers, and Telus, you can purchase the phone regardless what plan you have....But I guess its different at Bell? Someone school me on this!

bell or these reps confuse me. $10 mobile browser on a blackberry for unlimited browsing? why wouldn't everyone do that instead of paying for an actual data plan. this mobile browser has to be for regular phones only. i cant see how it can apply to iphones or any smartphones

Ikkaku 12-02-2009 09:42 PM

Regardless, you're not going to be able to get it at the $199.95 price tag.

bui95 12-02-2009 09:50 PM

actually...just found this to clarify myself and those stupid bells reps...check out the "unlimited mobile browser and the little note underneath it

Similar to Rogers/Fido, most stores will not allow you to buy out the iPhone as it is not in their advantage to do so. It costs $780 dollars to buy out 32gb 3GS. if correct, it costs bell/rogers/fido/telus $750 to buy one. It is not in their advantage to sell you at buyout. Thus some stores will refuse to service you unless you sign a 3year

as for that promo, if its anything like rogers, any iPhone activation without a voice and data bundle leads to a $200 surcharge ontop of ie:$299 for the 32gb 3GS. bell could be different, but i wouldnt expect it to be different. In order to carry the iphone, its pretty much Apple's way or the highway
