unlock is only if you're planning on using it with other provider. Installing SPB doesn't require any unlocking.

That only disables the Message sent bubble. I am trying to figure out how to disable the sms tone, everytime I send a text msg out.

I haven't turned my Winmo phone on in a while now, but try this:
In Advanced Config Tool:

Under messaging, there is an option to disable SMS sent notification.
(I'm not sure what it does exactly..it may just disable the bubble again, but try it)

I've tried that, it doesn't disable the SMS tone. It's kinda messed up because when I send txt and receive txt, the SMS tone goes off. It makes sense for incoming, but outgoing:confused:.

I'll try to figure it out later when I have time. Currently trying to get an offline GPS working. Still trying to get Garmin Xt to work.

If it's really annoying, the best choice may be to disable the Samsung SMS interface, and use a 3rd party app. There are some good SMS apps apparently, such as Vito and PowerSMS

If you SMS a lot, it might be worth looking to a 3rd party app anyway.

Typing Interface - Swype ("free") - This is first seen in the US release of Omnia II. Someone has extracted it to a CAB that can be installed on any Omnia II. But I have heard reports of it working on the HD2, so it's possible that it may work on any WVGA WinMo 6.5 device. It is pretty amazing, and could possibly the best way to type on a PDA ever. I installed Swype earlier today. Pretty wicked. I was using Touchpal before, I found Touchpal pretty good too.

Google Maps is great (especially since they now do traffic on major routes!) if you have an unlimited data plan, but if your data plan is limited, or if you're going somewhere you don't have coverage, or will have to pay roaming for your data, then something "offline" might be desirable ;) Plus, Google Maps *only* does a flat, 2D, north-up display and doesn't have turn-by-turn voice prompts.

If you like that 3D, heads-up navigation display, there's a free program that actually uses Google Maps data, but instead of constantly pulling down data as you drive, when you ask it for directions to a destination, it will download and cache JUST the data it needs for your route, and then disconnect... just offhand, I'm not sure what it's called, and my phone is in the other room... I'll check it and get back to you.

Really, the map data is what you pay for with almost all of these apps (iGo, Tom Tom, Garmin, etc.), which means you generally have to pay to update it as well, or to add more regions... same as with your standard mobile GPS unit. The benefit of the program using Google Maps data is that it's always the latest Google has available... and of course, it's free.

Well, I don't have a data plan, so I've been trying to see if I could get something offline to work.

I used iGuidance on my HTC Titan previously, it worked really well. I couldn't get it to work fully on my Omnia, but then, I didn't try very hard either, just took the memory card out of the HTC and plugged it into the Samsung and ran it from there... it would load and run, but would almost never lock on to satellites, even after I got a lock using something else (like Google Maps). Might have been better if I reinstalled it, but I never bothered messing with it.

Anyway, I can recommend checking out iGuidance...

I'll be installing Garmin XT on my phone for my Japan trip in February. 3G data is absurdly expensive there, if you're not signing up to a term contract. 1 month rental for unlimited 3G would cost about $300 USD. Softbank won't even let you rent a 3G sim card if you are on a smartphone, because they are afraid you will rack up a huge bill (it costs about $30 CAD per 1MB.. That means just loading Google Maps would cost about $20... Imagine using it every day! :lol)

FUUUUUUUUUUU. I installed Opera beta 10 browser on my phone and I wanted to go onto facebook to check out the browser, then the phone froze on me. I was only running windows live messenger. WTFFF, two programs and it froze.

my opera 10 beta works fine. maybe just try to reinstall?

Maybe it is the lack of ram issue again. I'll check it out later again and see if it does the same thing again. I ended up having to soft-reset after it froze earlier.

it IS a beta though. could just be a software thing. wouldnt be so quick to blame the phone itself.

Don't be so shocked when a BETA program crashes your phone.

I am not sure whether it is the Opera beta or the phone itself. There has been discussion in regards to programs closing or potentially freezing if it gets that bad, from the lack of ram the O2 has.

I don't know who you are discussing the issue of the Omnia II crashing with, but over at the very busy Omnia II section of Modaco, there is no such discussion. And the only time I have had mine freeze is when I fuck around with beta software, or messing around with settings.

It's true that insufficient memory will cause it to close an app, but with just 2 programs open, that should not happen. But then it depends on how much browsing you have been doing. Leaving Opera open for a long browsing session will cause it to eat up every last byte of available ram, closing all other apps.

The best thing to do may be to install a lightweight custom ROM, or even just disable a few things. Samsung WidgetPlus is a total piece of shit anyway, and in fact is disabled by default on newer ROMs it seems.

I'll try to get rid of/disable unnecessary crap.

Oh yeah, I remember that you mentioned skyfire browser was a battery drainer, why is that? I am thinking of testing that browser out.

It's essentially Firefox running on your mobile phone. With flash ads and everything, it drains battery quite fast. Version 1.5 just came out, and is actually a lot better than the previous version.
