Saddles are a very personal thing ... You have to try one before you buy one. Not really a "pick a color / pick a shape" kind of shopping.

Depends on your flexibility, your sit bones, how much u adjust and shift forward and back during a ride.

My advice for buying a seat, rent one and ride it for a week and find out if it's right for you.

Fizik seperates their saddles by how flexible you are... Ariones are for very flexible people, Antares is the next one ... I am extremely flexible, technically i should ride an Arione as per Fizik, but the Antares felt better on my sit bones.

I bought the Antares with 7x7 Kium rails so I didn't have to change my seat post. The braided rails are 7x9 and require a post that utilizes a vertical clamp (mine clamps horizontally). The seat is way lighter (hand feel) than the stock seat that came with my bike.

I'll have a better idea tomorrow ... gonna try to throw down another long one

Every company will have different interpretations of their saddles and of course, some are better than others. If and when you get your fitting done, most fitters will know what kind of saddle you will need based on how you ride, where you sit and the style of riding you do. They also factor in how flexible you are and whatnot.

I learned the hard way and had to go through one dud of a saddle which was the Specialized Toupe. It is "popular" but by no means the right saddle for me. The contour shape and build quality wasn't very suitable given my style of riding, flexibility, sit bones, and weight. I ended up with a Selle Italia Flite and so far, so good. Two very different saddles.

I've been commuting on my bike at least twice a week and it has helped immensely with my hill climb and average speed. When I first started this season I was trying to figure out the best way to be able to increase my average time and the only search result is "more seat time".

So fuck your $600, $800, and $1000 wheels. Get the best bike you can afford, get fitted and just go and fucking ride A LOT. I got my ass kicked by some old man on a steel Pinna with panniers up SFU hill. That is boss as fuck.

Throw on your Pro Race 4s and then get fitted. Seriously. There will be a noticeable difference.

After that, THEN get your wheels later on if you feel inclined to. There is very little difference between riding on my Reynolds Solitudes and my Fulcrum Racing 7 wheels now. The only difference now is weight, spoke count, and the tires on the Fulcrums (Schwalbe Lugano.)

Just get out and ride more. :D

I'm about ready to give up on my Fizik Aliante. I thought it would be a good wider saddle for me, but anything over 50k and the insides of my sit bones start getting sore even with the bib padding. I have an unknown Specialized saddle on my mtb which is narrower, but is much more comfortable for me even with no padding on my mtb shorts.

Oh, and like someone else mentioned, tires/tubes will make THE biggest difference (provided you've already been fitted). DAT ROLLING RESISTANCE :sweetjesus:. But most of you guys barely have a season under your belt of hard riding, what's the rush in upgrading so quickly? I paid $87 for my Conti 4000s and 5 tubes and they have been the best pay off ever. I'm riding heavier now with a pump, saddle bag, 1x tube, patch kit/lever, and multi-tool and I can kill my last year's lap times in half up climbs and what not.

For those who are mechanically inclined... My headset is creaking when i turn my handlebars. All signs point to dirt and shit inside the headset.

After I take apart the headset, what type of grease should I use?

Marine grease from canadian tire okay?

Any type of grease is fine. Although if you want to shave off more weight, skip the grease :p

Kidding of course. But, I don't think a little dirt would make a headset creak(unless you were trying the above stated weight savings tip already). Does your frame have actual headset cups(Pressed into the head tube), or is the headset integrated?

The headset bearings should be sealed cartridges which are usually non-serviceable. Just have a look and clean it up. Putting extra grease on top of the bearings will attract more crud.

Anyone run custom gears? If so how tall is your final gear? Always wanted to see how fast it would be possible to go if you stuck on a crazy tall gear combo for top speed.

i was googling "creaking headset handlebar" and most threads pointed towards dirt/grit, and to clean it up and regrease.

i just took it apart and cleaned up the grit. We'll see if it creaks tomorrow during my ride

all these noises are so annoying. makes a new bike feel broken

my focus has integrated headset.

the more im reading, the more im learning that over time, because of the design, grit getting in and wearing out where the bearings seat into causes the creaking noise...

i'll see how tomorrow goes.

I'm thinking of bringing my bike in for a fitting @ PMS since everyone has had nothing but a great experience there.

Do you need to book appointments in advance, or do they do same day bookings? I'll probably need him to look over my derailleurs as well, cause the front one doesn't shift properly sometimes :s
