I have 3 friends doing it, all girls. I feel so much less manly now. They also run tri's.

Oh! Does anyone else really really REALLY like Lezyne stuff? For some reason I just love the way Lezyne products look, feel and work. I got myself Lezyne bottle cages, floor pump, multi tool, mini pump... I gotta stop.

I haven't actually ridden it that much... had 3 rides on it and then I screwed up my ankle playing ultimate and I've been icing/resting it as much as I can. Today will be my first ride in 2 weeks time. It's almost like I'm destined to not ride...

Question - how the heck do you measure pressure with the pump gauge on a Presta valve? I unscrewed the little nut at the end of the valve, attached my pump, and tried to pump it and the pressure gauge shot up to 100 psi immediately. I don't know if that seems right or not, it felt way too easy. 100 psi on a single pump? Granted the bike tires were already pumped up from beforehand but I'm not sure how this works exactly... It's not like my car tires or MTB tires where when I attach the pump it immediately gives me the pressure reading.

It's measured the same way you would on a schrader valve. Make sure you unscrew the valve enough, otherwise, your pump is just reading the air pressure in the pump hose. Otherwise, you can check your pressure with a stand-alone pressure gauge. You can use an adapter if your gauge only accepts schrader.

I unscrewed the valve, tapped it to make sure it was loose (it burped some air), screwed on the chuck (Lezyne has a screw on chuck) and then tried to pump it. I don't know if I did it right or not, that's the problem!

The gauge has no reading until I start pumping, whereas the other style (Schrader) will read when I screw on the hose from my small 12v compressor. This is what is confusing me I guess.

EDIT: I don't know if I'm reading the pressure in my pump hose or the actual pressure in the tube, that's my confusion.

I have a Filzer floor pump with built-in guage and it does the same thing when I plug it into the presta valve. Very little pressure shows up on the guage til I give it a pump. However, it gives me a "normal" reading, so I assume it's reading the pressure in the tube.

I guess it depends on the mechanics of the pump. But when I toss on my pump, some air briefly escapes and then I get a reading on the gauge. If you pump it 2-3 more times does it go to 110-120? If it rockets way past 120, then you are probably just reading the air in the pump hose and it's not actually reading the tire pressure.

+1

It all comes down to the mechanics of the pump as hud_91gt mentioned. Obviously, some pumps are better than others in terms of the quality of product engineering and materials. I went through several pumps finding out some pumps were extremely inaccurate or the lock mechanism was flimsy, resulting in broken Presta valves. One day, Alphamale went to Sportcheck and bought this $30 Cytech branded pump. I was like "WTF is this shit?" Well, I ate my words.

Best $30 pump - eVAR!

Another Filzer pump here. Works great with both types of valves.

^ That's the valve destroyer. I've had issues with it, and a few others on this site. I upgraded to the other MEC pump and have never looked back. Although, this $30 sportcheck pump sounds like a steal.

Damn

I noticed that the head of the pump can be a bitch to latch on sometimes when flipping the switch.

Which pumps are you guys using now?

If it hasn't been too long, just exchange it. I brought mine back to MEC after a couple months and told them it was destroying my tubes. I just bought the next one up at MEC.

This is the pump I'm talking about. In fact, it's cheaper!

Cytec Floor Bike Pump w/Gauge - SportChek.ca

(The picture in the link is incorrect. Pump looks as-is except it says "Cytec" on it.)
