That bike is probably worth 100 tops. Thing is old and parts look fairly low end

RESN 06-22-2012 01:11 PM

^ How about something like this?

Norco Magnum SE

he listed it for $250 OBO

Actually, if you're just riding around the city, I think the Norco Hybrid would be fine. And you might be able to bargain down a few more bucks. I would pick that over over the Univega.

Thanks for the help. I was debating between buying from Different Bikes or Cap's Westwood Cycle but opted for DB because they offer lifetime basic tune ups and discounts if you buy a bike through them. It's also closer to me and they were willing to answer emails unlike Cap's. The bike was a bit more expensive but they price matched it with no issues.

I ended up getting the '12 Giant Defy 1 with PD-A530 pedals. It was my first time on a road bike and man this thing is fast compared to mountain bikes. Too bad it rained today because I was really looking forward to ride it at around 5pm.

I've bought a bike from Caps Westwood before with no issues but I know exactly what I need and want and I'm in and out usually. But there have been many instances of Caps WW employing inexperienced kids as pushy salepeople, and also some stories of douchey post-sale customer service treatment. Different Bikes on the other hand has a very solid reputation for service and pricing, so you made the right choice for sure.

Hey guys found this bike for a great price.. It's 55cm, not sure if it would be too tall for me. I'm 5'10, 32 inseam. Thoughts?

Garneau Hybrid Bike

link down :(

this seems like a pretty ok deal. not sure how much Kona's swing for brand new but $300 for what looks to be solid components/frame seems like a good deal

2011 kona jake road/urban commuter long distance bike

I'd totally be down for a cross bike to use as a commuter. best of both worlds!

Still waiting on my wheels. Cancelled my R501 wheels from CRC, ended up finding a set of DT Swiss RR1850 for the price of basically just the rear hub :)

Looking to buy a decent road bike in the future. There are some killer deals on bikesdirect.com. Obviously the frames are chinese knockoffs etc but the components are good. Is this my best best, and maybe finding a second hand frame in the future?

hud 91gt 06-27-2012 11:54 AM

Taking a look around some shops this afternoon. What is the lowest type of components I should be looking for? Shimano 105? Lower, higher? The bike is used for recreational use, but I don't want junk. I was bike into MTBing for years but road riding is all new to me.

bcrdukes 06-27-2012 12:14 PM

At the very very least - get a bike with Tiagra components.

I am in the exact same boat as you. After looking around for a bit, I decided to do my own frame up build because I found a great deal on my frame. I ordered the rest of my parts online. I'll be well under $1000 for a aluminum/carbon frame carbon fork with all parts brand new 105 level or higher.

I would say Tiagra/105 is pretty much entry level gear, 105=SLX/LX in MTB parts and Tiagra=Deore.

hud 91gt 06-27-2012 12:52 PM

Good to know thanks guys. Found a Jamis ventura comp for 640 and that incluess a hundred dollars in gear! Think its a no brainer!

hud 91gt 06-27-2012 01:05 PM

Ugh. Thought it was tiagra all around, but there is Sora in there as well. What do you guys thing for the money?

2011 JAMIS BICYCLES - SPECIFICATIONS

UFO 06-27-2012 01:48 PM

Hard to beat it for the money for a brand new bike that you can test fit and everything. Sport Chek has the Team Assist program you can sign up for too with a coupon that saves an extra 20% although it takes a few weeks for the coupons to arrive.

bcrdukes 06-27-2012 01:57 PM

Should be fine, especially if you're on a tight budget. And you may not even like riding after! :p

hud 91gt 06-27-2012 05:05 PM

I have the coupon's, that's why i'm getting the deal. Although I'm pretty sure I have convinced myself to get the Ventura Race for 900, plus a hundred dollars worth of accessories. Carbon stays, 105 all around (minus the brakes), different wheels. I think i'd be happy with this bike for a while, since I wouldn't have to change any component.

hud 91gt 06-27-2012 05:06 PM

You guys have any other suggestions in the <$900 mark? I still think it's hard to beat. The comp is a better deal, but I think I will regret not getting the 105 components, and I think the carbon stays will be a nice touch.

bcrdukes 06-27-2012 06:43 PM

If you already think you'll regret not getting the 105, forget anything with Tiagra. The price is tough to beat and it's now the summer season. Shopes and Craigslist will be scarce for deals.

dat_steve 06-27-2012 08:44 PM

remember, your bike is a tool not a jool!

J89 06-27-2012 10:53 PM

anyone want to do a evening ride next week? Maybe start from Burnaby and bike to Vancouver or Richmond or something lol
