Haha, thanks for the input. Yes the cost is an issue, not in the sense that I mind spending the $$, but rather that I would like to spend it on my bike instead.

Perhaps next year it'll be in the cards, or if I can score a good deal online, I'll consider it. Is everyone staying there for the night?

Agreed! It is a good experience if you've never done it before, so I would recommend it. Seems like all the riders who responded are just in it for their best fastest time, however, it is a 'ride' not a race (even though it's timed). So yeah, I would personally stop at all the rest areas to try out the food/drinks/samples, and not be too worried about the time it takes to get to the finish line the first time around. You get the experience by participating. I guess that includes waiting in line for your lunch afterwards.

If cost is an issue, perhaps you may consider this other group ride, the MEC Century ride on Sunday, Aug. 24th. Choose from either 50k or 100k, and starts & ends from Pinetree Community Centre in Coquitlam. It'll still have aid stations, full support, etc. for only $35. I'll be there.

All this fondo talk is tempting me haha. Support and rest stops seem to be mainly what you're paying for (other than the experience), but I'd probably just ride it straight and skip the stops.

FWIW I've ridden burnaby to whistler solo, and it was a blast, so I'm not sure how much more fun it would be to be participate in the granfondo. (I usually ride solo, haven't gotten into group rides/races yet since I just started road riding this year)

I've done it last year without much training. And I must say I'm still glad I did albeit a slow time. The experience is totally different. Having 5000 cyclists around and just chatting at rest stops and meeting new people, having your own lane the whole way and also lions gate. I would say it's worth it to try it at least once. Cost is quite high id say so I'm skipping out this year. But I'm glad to have at least done it once.

My friends are doing the 50km mec ride this Sunday so I'll probably be joining them as well

Hey Guys,

Does anyone have a bottle cage SADDLE mount that I could borrow for a day?

Will take you out for a beer :)

azncreationz 08-22-2014 06:35 PM

^ shoot, I just sold one a couple of weeks ago. I do have a seat post mount one (Profile design, 2 bottle) you can borrow if you wish.

On that note, anyone have a rear 26" disc wheel, with or w/o 7-8 spd cassette that they're willing to sell? Thanks.

604CEFIRO 08-22-2014 08:20 PM

Thanks for the offer! But my s2 seat post won't take a mount

Must be saddle mounted :s

So how was the MEC ride guys!?

My buddy reported back, his group got lost twice, and apparently there were some pretty EPIC gradient sections! (22%+)

actually mec marked right before where to turn with neon pink and green labels a head of time and have clear signs showing where to turn

kayceeee 08-25-2014 04:49 PM

mec ride was fun! i saved the route so i can try to do it again without having to wait around lol.

we didnt have 22% at least i thought cuz i did the 50km ride.

and yes aalex recognize and we met for the first time. btw your bike is sick!! and so is the pinarello with dura-ace c50 wheels you were riding with!

dton13 08-25-2014 08:47 PM

I had the opportunity to ride up Mount Baker on sat and if anyone hasn't already ridden it, I would FULLY recommend it. It was an amazing ride, probably one of my favourites so far, better than whistler imo. The top bit is amazing and the switchbacks are "stelvio"-esque haha. Some pics I took from the ride (ignore the IG filters):

Going through this thread, I totally effed up selling my Specialized Secteur Sport. I have a hybrid that well get me through short little 2 mile rides for now but I'm definitely going to search to get another Secteur in the near future.

Hey aalex, thats your scott foil?

love the bike :)

The rear tire bead at the valve stem looks odd for some reason? or is it just the photo?

yes that's exact same bike you see at la biciletta ride at Stanley park in early summer.
I got flat tire at end of the ride and rushed put my tire on improperly. I got it fixed when I get home

Thanks
