Anyone here doing some downhill? The guy who sold me the bike told me about Vedder mountain and the one who sold me the bike rack told North shore or nothing. Suggestions? Where do you guys ride?
Where do you shop for parts/gear?

Tried clipping in for the 2nd time last weekend. 1st time I managed to finish my ride without falling. 2nd time not so lucky. Bailed as I was trying to get off the saddle but still had one side clipped in and I put my weigh on the wrong side lol. Fml

North Shore, despite it's taming down over the last 10-15 years is still aggressive technical riding. If you've never done any real mountain biking it will all be challenging unless you stick to Fromme, which is a boring climb up on the main road, and then take the first couple trails down (Bobsled or Floppy Bunny). Other then that, ride ride ride. Ride them all. There isn't a best, they are all good and different in their own way.

I've taught a few people to ride with clips. They either get it or they don't.... And when they don't it's generally the person is still sitting on their saddle when coming to a stop. Get off your ass, stand over the top tube, and come to a stop like a man! Literally, if you unclip one foot when standing over the top tube, you have way more balance and maneuverability to put the bike where you want it. One foot down, and plant it. The bike has no where to go but follow.

So after I've used the edge 820 for a while, I have these thoughts, hope it helps prospective buyers (I reviewed this on Amazon and just copied what I wrote there):

Not sure how I feel about this device. Wifi, I thought, would be a welcome addition but to get it to work was so convoluted. First, you MUST plug this into a windows or mac machine, you cannot do this via mobile phone to get it to access wifi, it will not let you access wifi any other way (I find this stupid because you can add new networks on the device after you connect it to your pc or mac). I don't understand why it needed this extra step. If you try to initially set up wifi on the device it will redirect you to their site. Second, the software is straight up garbage town and takes so much time to set up a simple network. The express software is slow and buggy. Third, you CANNOT connect to a hidden network, I didn't find this out until I dug through forums and troubleshooting (I like to hide my SSID). FINALLY, the wifi does not connect automatically when you get home. When you are tired, you don't wanna fiddle with anything. Last thing I want to do after a ride is get the sluggish interface to pull down and hit the wifi refresh to upload data.

Ok, my wifi gripes are out of the way. Now onto the interface, I saw reviews on youtube and the touch interface seems responsive enough, but the screen is so finicky. It's capacitative, but of incredibly low quality that it feels like resistive type of lcd. Sometimes you have to press it hard to register any response. Swiping is slow and navigating can be frustrating especially with cold fingers. It doesn't need to be smart phone sensitive, but it should register on first touch given that I maxed the sensitivity.

The only thing I truly love and the reason I got this over the 520 is the true pathfinding. This device reads coordinates and can recalculate routes which the 520 cannot do. The 520 kind of just leads you back in the general direction where you left your course. That is seriously the only thing that is good.

The collision detection is wonky. I had an abrupt stop after hitting some bad terrain and blew a tube, well it called my emergency contact and scared her. I disabled this. Otherwise all the connectivity is essentially the same as the 520.

I now actually prefer the 520 for all the cons the 820 has. Above the touch screen, tactile buttons would be a much, much better option.

Save your money, get an edge 520. The features of the 820 make this device feel like it's in beta stages. This device is simply not refined for the price. I write this review even though I didn't buy on amazon. I still want people to know that this thing is not worth the money.

PS, there were several firmware updates and I don't think future updates will address any of the drawbacks that this has. Oh and this has group track but others you ride with have to have a device that has group track, otherwise it's useless because :alone: no one wants to ride with a FG/SS rider for long distances...

+1 on the Garmin Express software. What a disappointing pile of shit.

I haven't been too happy with my Garmin 500. It was great when new, but I swear ever since the new models started coming out it takes forever to load satellites, and it can be a real pain for Strava to see if it's hooked up. That may be a strava issue though.




On a high note though, just sold my Jamis. 5 years, a few thousand km. Kind of sad to see it go, but the new old Titanium steed is way to sexy to look at, even though it is slightly small.



EDIT: The guy who bought my bike actually brought someone who worked at a bike shop. He noticed my saddle was bent on one rail. Says it can lead to some bad pain. Could be cause from a seat too high, or muscle imbalance. Guess who has been having at times some serious back pain on that side?

Glad he noticed that. Going to spend the cash on a proper bike fit. I've been going to Physic and chiro for ages trying to solve this but who knew it was probably caused by the bike. Argh

I got 520 because with gloves, riding in the winter, the touch screen sucks balls.

I started off with a Jamis Ventura Comp and was pretty happy, years ago. Giant has some pretty nice entry level road bikes that are pretty reasonably priced too.

Maybe Costco is cheaper.

Those that live in a small condo, where do you do your bike maintenance (cleaning, lubing etc...)? It's just not feasible to have a bike maintenance stand in the apartment, nor can I clean the bike inside.

Inside the bike room, otherwise I go to OCB or Kickstand if I have time.

I'm lucky enough to have a underground parking where I wash the bike. Friends of mine do the same thing but outside.


All maintenance is done inside on a stand which folds away. Kitchen table get's pushed to the side, and the work begins. On nice summer days i'll do it on the deck.

Maintenance is done inside as well. I got a mini stand that's ghetto but it works and takes a part easy for storage.

I'll try to wash in my parkade as well. We dont have any designated spots though. How much was that stand. Most of the stands I found online were $200+. I'll need something I can fold up and store it.
