What is an unprofessional shop? Could you name a few so I don't end up going there?

Go to a shop and talk to people; try 3 bikes. 2 within your price range and 1 totally way beyond. This way you can tell what's going on.

1) Always buy a smaller size than you need. There are ways to fit you on a smaller but you can't size down. I'm 5'5 and definitely a 52cm for Specialized was still a bit big. I wish there were 50' out there on CL.

I went to check out the bike yesterday and the sales person was really really nice and helpful. I told him I was interested in getting my first road bike and the ALR01 caught my eye and was within my budget.

He spent a good amount of time just telling me about bikes and all the different components and told me what to look for when shopping around. Showed me a couple different bikes and why they were different as well as different price points and what you get at certain ranges. Told me about sizing and measured me. Turns out i'm a 51.5 and how to properly measure the bike to see if it would work for me.

Said the same thing about testing the bikes, just keep on testing to see how different bikes ride even though it's outside of my budget.

I'm planning on going back to do a test ride, didn't have time yesterday as I was just dropping by while the wife did groceries lol.

Pockets not that deep, although certain colors available were very unique.

Super excited, the anticipation

What do you guys think of https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5044-4...0-Road-Bicycle

Someone messaged me selling one in my size for $1200 minus wheels or $1700 with wheels.

Classic manufacturer bait and switch... "Shimano 11-speed Ultegra groupset."

You mean... Ultegra Brifters & Derailleurs, 105 cassette, and worse than 105 non-series chainset and brake calipers.

That's not bad imo. I almost bought one when it was new, it was $3250 then. I'd be interested in it if it's in size!

trollguy is right, it's setup with Ultegra mechanical at the moment. I'm contemplating of swapping it up with Di2 but I'll wait until I've ridden the bike long enough before making the swap. The overall geometry is a lot more aggressive than my old bike. I typically ride a 52, I got this one as a 50 but I wish I got a 48. The frame is huge!

I was looking at all around wheels from In the Know Cycling and he recommended these Reynolds as the best value all-around wheelset. Originally I was gunning for a Dura-Ace C35 but couldn't resist getting these when I found a slightly used pair being sold for less than $1000

That's a pretty good deal on the wheels, nice score! I think I saw you at Ride Don't Hide on the weekend? Well, recognized the bike anyways...

Yeah that's ridiculous. My Cervelo R3 was $3k new with a full Ultegra build kit.

So I ended up getting the Giant TCR SLR2 2016 instead of the Ridley. Taking whitev70r's advice and just going to ride this as much this season and look into getting a better setup next year (if I find I need to).

Besides a helmet and new pedals what would you guys suggest getting? Thinking of getting padded shorts

6793026 06-28-2017 08:16 AM

you will need padded shorts for sure
1) bike pump (for home)
2) spare tube
3) Co2 X 2 (each is ~$2); saves u doing 100 pumps on a mini pump
4) water bottle

Beautiful looking bike! Wow, that Giant TCR is no slouch ... where did you find that gem? Set a goal, like when you can do a 100 kms ride/race or when you can climb one of the three local mountains, then reward yourself with next level bike ... carbon frame, ultegra, etc.

Yah shorts and a jersey, now you got to look the part!

Sick Giant. I've always liked the TCR.

Get padded shorts for sure, some padded riding gloves and sunscreen in addition to the things already mentioned above.

Expresso 06-28-2017 09:59 AM

What's wrong with the current pedals? Just add some shoes and cleats.

Spare tubes/CO2 not needed, just call wife.

ForbiddenX 06-28-2017 11:50 AM

Thanks for the suggestions as to what to get guys!

I wanted just flat pedals so I could ride the bike a little more comfortabley. Was a little hard riding it without the proper shoes. I wanna get the helmet and get used to biking again before getting shoes :P

Try these, these will be your best friend as you start out. Dual, flat on one side, clip on the other, best of both worlds, that's what I got on mine. Just means you have to go with SPD instead of Look cleats/shoes.

Here is another option, convertible pedals - https://vancouver.craigslist.ca/rds/bop/6180904547.html

there's nothing wrong with falling over at intersections because clipped in :noyoudidnt::noyoudidnt:

and great pick up!

they aren't meant to be used without cleats. I respectfully disagree with getting the shimano a530s. Those things are straight garbage.

1) the platform side have very little grip. they absolutely suck in the rain unless you ride on the cleat side in which case you might as well just use the pedals you have now.
2) weening off the platform side, you might as well get el cheapo plastic ones for half the cost and ride around in them until you feel comfortable with the spd sl.
3) those a530s are wide and your crank arms are already like 170-175mm? those pedals will be kissing the ground or curb.

I used to use the a530s for commuting. once you get use to something that clips in, you'll never use the platform side again.

bcrdukes 06-28-2017 08:37 PM

+1

The A530s are a complete waste of time and money.

whitev70r 06-28-2017 08:53 PM

Depending on how you ride and what you use it for ... the A530 can serve its purpose. C'mon, these people can't all be wrong, can they?
