Thanks! Will keep those options in mind.

Will visit a few stores this weekend. Which stores do you guys recommend?

Strictly my opinions only. Consider what others have to say as well.

1. You can get a new or use Tiagra level bike with that price but you have more options of you have a budget somehere between $750 - $1000. Bike stores are having sales now so now is a good time to look around.

2. Stick with the popular brands - Cannondale, Trek, Giant, Scott, Specialized etc. Again, for that price you have in mind, try to get at least a Tiagra level bike. Try it out for a season or two and if you don't like it, you can always sell it again without breaking the bank too much.

3. I'm generalizing but I think a 53 or 54cm bike would work for you. Always make sure it fits! Go to the store to figure that out first.

Good luck!

2. Looking for a road bike, have another recreation bike
3. Height - 5"10

I am a noob when it comes to cycling, looking for a road bike to start with.

Sportchek
Jamis Ventura Race
105 Components + Carbon Fork and Seat Stay/Seat Post
$1119.99-20% (team assist) = $895.99
54cm in stock at Marine Drive/Bryne Sportchek and Abby
And maybe Richmond/Metro

Jamis Ventrua Comp
Tiagra/Sora Component, Carbon Fork/Seatpost
$799.99-20% (team assist) = $639.99
54cm, RC shows 1 in stock, so does park royal

GT Series 2 Road Bike
105 Components and Carbon Fork
$1039-20% off (team assist) = $831
Size M avaliable at Abby or Metro (each shows 1)

Those 3 are all solid values imo...

saw the gt series 2 during my commute to work - sexy bike and solid components for a sub $1000 price tag!

fixie ride to iona and steveston today. it was cool running a paceline with fixies because we all more or less have the same gear ratios so it was super easy to get in sync.

UFO 09-15-2012 12:37 PM

Fixed or singlespeed? I have no idea what compels people to ride true fixies aside from a premature death wish haha

dat_steve 09-15-2012 01:02 PM

fixed lol just give it a go dude very different experience riding a fixed gear than a geared road bike. almost zen-like being one with the bike :fullofwin:

i don't do skidz fo daYz haha i find that riding fixed is great training. helps develop a good cadence and spin form.

UFO 09-15-2012 01:42 PM

I tried the singlespeed thing for a while on a MTB, and I really wanted to like it more than anything else. But I couldn't go downhill as fast as I wanted, or go uphill as efficiently as I wanted either. I found it took away from my enjoyment of riding, and I didn't want to change what I rode to accommodate the lack of gears.

I haven't ridden more than 7km in almost 3 months now but I'm down. I need to get my riding legs back. I'm a nogo for this Saturday though. Just putting that out there.

Totally OT, but I bought a pair of bib shorts and it's the single best purchase I've ever made biking wise.

I truly think you are. :p

How long do you expect to complete this ride in? I ask because last time I did that with Alphamale (with the exception of a hill climb up Grouse) it took us 6 hours. 7 if you include a food break and the ride home.

If you plan on finishing that in 3 hours...

azncreationz 09-18-2012 09:19 PM

Sorry if this is a bit late but... REI-Outlet.com had 75% off quite a number of items today!! Great time to stock up on new jerseys, shorts, commuting gear etc.. Hopefully they extend it another day, but lots of sizes sold out now.

bcrdukes, you're welcome to join our group this Saturday morning, we're riding to Iona from South Burnaby. Leisurely pace.

I've made the decision to upgrade bikes. For anybody looking to get into road biking, I'm selling my 2011 Diamondback Podium 4 with Shimano Ultegra group/FSA Energy compact hollow forged crank. $1200 obo! :)

woob 09-19-2012 05:09 PM

bcrdukes 09-19-2012 05:35 PM

Nice choice of new ride! I've gotta say though I think you may have a tough time getting offer at that asking price (maybe I'm wrong) but with the time of year and all the sales going on... anyways best of luck and the CAAD10 is shweeeet!

Now that I have developed a road bike addiction, I'm looking to get a set of slicks for everyday riding so I can save the cross tires for trail/winter rides.

Anyone have recommendations on tires that they have enjoyed? I'm leaning towards Conti Gatorskins (~$40 on Amazon) for their puncture resistance, as the roads here are quite rough and always full of debris.
