^ Look up the GP4000 as well. There are many threads on bikeforums comparing the Gatorskin to the GP4000. My dad has been on GP4000 tires for a while now.

Jubilee Cycles has a 2011 Kona Jake The Snake for $1049 or something like that. Saw it yesterday when I was there. :)

i'd love a kona jake but CL seems to always have some decent ones (105 components) for ~$500.

Is Sram Rival an upgrade over Ultegra?

It's arguable to the point where it's a bit of a 'beating on a dead horse" sorta thing. Some people will say:
Tiagra = Apex
105 = Rival
Ultegra = Force
Dura Ace = Red.

Others will say that 105 = Apex and Ultegra = Rival and soforth. (Force was SRAM's first product line so its a weird one.)

I prefer the overall feel of SRAM and not a big fan of Shimano's lever and shifting mechanism. They feel clunky and cheap but this comes down to a personal preference. SRAM components are notably lighter than their Shimano counterparts.

Last week, I missed out on an '07 JtS for 650 :( . I rarely see any CX bike pop up on CL for <$1000.

aiya... This reminds me of how I sold my Jake the Snake on CL for a measly $500...and I've been crying ever since. I'm sure the buyer was laughing the whole way home.

bcrdukes or anyone else that can drop some technical knowledge my way... So my JtS has a FSA Gossamer Compact 46/36, my rear cassette is a Shimano 105 11-28 10 spd.

I'm looking to purchase a 2nd set of rims/tires so that I can have one set of rims that's for trails (has knobby tires) and the second set of rims/tires for just the road. I want to be able to swap them out quickly when needed.

When i purchase a cassette, do i have to stick with 11/28 ?

There's no harm dropping down to a 11-23 or 11-25, but going bigger than a 28t low gear you may run into issues with your chain not being long enough if you get into your large chainring and lowest gear (which you shouldn't do anyways because its hard on the drivetrain). Your chain won't get any shorter since you're keeping the 11t high gear. And you won't run out of chain if you plan to use a smaller than 28t low gear.

The one thing to be aware of though is that your new rim is close to the same width and height as your current rim otherwise your brake setup will not work the same for both sets of wheels without a tweaking everytime you swap over. And make sure both sets of wheels are centered (dished) properly over the hubs otherwise the braking once again will be compromised.

Right now I'm running Shimano RS10A Wheelset. If I stick with anything shimano, would width and height be compatible?

If I go with eastons, campy, or other brands, how do i know which rims are compatible with my bike?

Also, any positive or negative gains with going with 11/23 or 11/25 cassette?

All 700c rims will technically be compatible with the bike, its the amount of fine tuning that may or may not be needed to allow 2 different wheelsets to be 'hot-swappable'. Even within Shimano, RS10 rim dimensions are likely to be quite different from say an RS80 rim. You can try looking up the external rim width and height of the braking surface to determine how close 2 rims are, but not every manufacturer will list this info. Keep in mind to look for a Shimano/SRAM freehub, the Campy ones are different.

As for rear cassette gearing, you should be fine on an 11-25 with a 36-46 front. It all depends on how you find your gearing now. If you find that you run out of low gears, it may not be the best idea to move to an 11-25 since your lowest gear will be harder than with an 11-28. If you find you are never in the first and second low gears anyways, then you can move to an 11-25 and lose nothing, but you'll gain tighter and more consistent gearing. Since your high gear stays as an 11, you're not going to gain or lose anything on the high end. I run an 11-28 because I'm using a standard road 53-39, and I need that 39x28 low gear. Having such a large spread results in a slightly larger gap in some gears than I would prefer to maintain a consistent cadence, ie. one gear feels too easy but the next one up feels slightly too hard

i've put about 250 km so far on my bike

but now starting to notice that when i shift the back gear from the largest ring to the smallest ring, it makes a clanking sound and its a bit abrupt when it changes, not so smooth anymore.

what should i do? wd40? lube the ring? something wrong with my casssette or derailers?

any input appreciated.

New cables will stretch. Youtube rear derailleur adjustment and it should fix your problem.
