You need BOTH 1700/2100 to use the phone on WIND.
WIND's phones are compatible with Rogers/Fido on 2G if they are to be unlocked. They are not compatible with Bell/Telus because they use 850/1900 3G if im not mistaken
so yeah, stryken is partly right
PS, nexus one supports 720p !!

^ That is correct. GSM is useless here (Canada) unless you want to be on Rogers' network. Bell, Telus, and Wind all do NOT use GSM at all.
I had no idea about the "both bands required" for Wind though. Learn something new everyday. |

I've decided I'm going to stay on Fido for now (off contract now yayyy), save up some dough, and buy a WIND-compatible cellphone after I buy a dSLR.

I thought you just need the 1700 band cuz that's the AWS band, 2100 is called IMT, why do you need both? :S Posted via RS Mobile |

It makes no sense that you'd need both; a phone can only use one at a time...

from a wind employee:
For everyone's sanity, please begin referring to frequencies by band number.
Band I/1 = IMT, 2100 (sometimes incorrectly referred to as 1900/2100)
Band II/2 = PCS, 1900
Band III/3 = DCS, 1800
Band IV/4 = AWS, 1700 (sometimes incorrectly referred to as 1700/2100)
Band V/5 = CLR, 850
Band VIII/8 = GSM, 900
so i'm gunna guess you "need both" cuz it's labelled incorrectly.

LOL that does not even make sense. If its labelled incorrectly that means AWS is only 1700 and does not include 2100. Posted via RS Mobile |

From what I was told, AWS=1700. The reason you need both bands is because one of them is for downlink and the other is for uplink. I read this from a technical thread that was posted up on hofo I believe.

So IMT 2100 MHz isn't compatible with AWS 2100 MHz?
EDIT: I have figured it out. OK so they both receive at 2100 MHz but transmit on different frequencies. Calling it 1700/2100 is indeed stupid. Just call it IMT or "1700". To make things extra confusing, AWS is nicknamed "2100" after its receiving frequency, and IMT is nicknamed "1700" after its sending frequency.

Can anyone explain how their WindZones work?
I read the FAQs and what I took from it was...
1. Wind Home to Wind Away is similar to roaming/long distances so there is extra fees involved?
2. Wind Home to Wind Home is similar to local calling but say if I call from Wind Home (Toronto) to Wind Home (Vancouver) would there be extra charges?
TIA

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here. My statements assume YOU are a Wind customer.
My understanding is that any call from a Wind Zone to Wind Zone is free. You can call Toronto if your buddy is also a Wind customer. Anyone who isn't a Wind customer is essentially in the Away zone, even if they're physically inside a Wind zone.
Calling a non-Wind or person who's NOT in wind.. my understanding is that it depends on the plan. If you're in a Wind zone.. $15 = local, $35 = province-wide, $45 = Canada-wide. If you're outside, it's 25c/min.
Receiving calls.. free if you're in the Wind zone, it's free. If you aren't, it's 25c/min to receive.

however i dont see why this is so hard for people to understand... it describes it perfectly in the description on their site. Wind zone = your local zone in each of the supported cities (van, toronto, calgary, edmonton, etc), same as Fido's home zone for example.
If you are physically in this zone, you have these calling features depending on the plan you have. If you are on: Chat: 100 province wide minutes to ANY number in your province Always Talk: unlimited province wide minutes to ANY number in your province Always Shout: unlimited nation wide minutes to ANY number in Canada
*** ALL of these plans have unlimited WIND to WIND minutes calling nation wide
*** If you call/receive calls while you are OUTSIDE a wind zone, you pay 25 cents a minute to/from ANY NUMBER for roaming. That is it, no long distance charge, just 25 cents a minute, even if you are in
the USA. If you drive up to Whistler and call a Whistler number, it costs 25cents a minute. If you fly down to Miami with your wind phone and call your buddy in LA, it STILLS costs 25cents a minute.
*** You can be in ANY wind zone across canada to benefit from the unlimited features, not just your local area. Ie if you have a vancouver number, you can be in toronto or calgary and still enjoy the
same benefits of your plan as if you were in vancouver.
jesus people, talk about reading comprehension fail...

As he said... it's sad that Rogers charges you (being a fido/rogers user) 35ct if you are outside of your area and about $1 a min if you are in the states... and wind only charges you 25ct while ROAMING on Rogers' network.

It's like buying retail costs less than if you bought wholesale. Fuking ridiculous. I guess 1 way or another, the big 3 is STILL ripping people off no matter how much competition we get.
Try $1.75 a minute roaming in the states.

Hey J, which cellphone company do you use and the plan?
Wind Zone only applies to North America right? Asia or Europe has to pay long D?

The $35 Wind plan is pretty good, unlimited in/out calls with caller id but I have to buy another phone. I don't think my E71 will work with Wind mobile.

im on the $45 voice plan with the $20 charged internet plz.. i get 50% off voice plan for 6 months.. so really its $5 after taxes with internet..
the best part is, ALL the addons like caller id, voicemail, call display and what not are all included.. just plan plus taxes.. no other fees.. which is nice...
after 6months, i will switch to the $35 plan.. its pretty good.. and i really dont need the internet on the phone.. so i will cancel it actually when the month is over.
