older generation people dont care much about what type of phone they have as long as it works. Younger generations are into new gadgets and tend to want to have the lastest thing. How often do you see a 40+ year old person with iphone4 or nexus s or any smartphone, unless its for business use. its usually the younger kids... thats what i was refering to

So, you think it's a good idea for WIND to only cater to budget consumers and disregard consumers who may want a high-end phone?

Because that's whats happening right now, and they are doing this by CHOICE.

there target is the budget consumers. In fact it's better for them if their customers don't have high end phones because they will likely do less browsing/tethering/data. In fact mobilicity doesn't cover certain areas of the lower mainland because the general population there is too rich to fully utilize the service. Throwing up costly towers to a place with less saturated target market aka certain budget ranged consumers, will just bring the price of the service up for everyone else. It makes total sense that wind chooses to not carry certain phones to better accommodate their product to their target market.

Wind is getting the 9780 as expected:

http://www.windmobile.ca/community/W...ng-blackberry/

willystyle 01-11-2011 01:31 PM

FYI, the price listed on the WIND website is not the price that you can reserve it for today. $450 is the price on launch date, which would be sometime near the end of this month.

For instance, I called the Wind Mobile on Hastings and they told me the price is $480 for the Blackberry 9780 if I pick it up today to take advantage of the Holiday Miracle Plan.

Then I called the one at Tinsletown, they told me the price is $470 for the T-Mobile Blackberry 9780 (Unlocked).

It seems like the price at the moment varies depending on which Wind Mobile you contact.

Is the wind service/frequency good like the other phone companies thats been around for ages and has contracts?

J____ 01-11-2011 03:45 PM

of course not. But for a company that's been operating + building their network for only a year compared to 20 yrs, it's damn good. Especially if you consider that it cost half of what it would cost if you were with the other companies. I would say it's at 90% compared to the big 3. However taking the price point + products vs. minor network bugs, Wind is far superior than the other big 3 for me.

it really depends where you live, work, play. if you do all the above in the GVRD and dont mind a rare dropped call every once in a while (1 in 100 from experience and getting better), then you'd benefit greatly with Wind. But if you spend most of your time in squamish and demand 100% coverage everywhere you go where ever a cell signal is possible, but dont mind paying double for the same/simliar plan, then go with rogers, bell, telus.

distanc3 01-11-2011 03:55 PM

^ well put.

Plus I think Wind's mobile plans are quite friendly offering complementary add-ons (caller id etc) without charge. Their plans are straight forward with pay before or pay after option :)

Noob question how would I know if I'm on 3.5G? Would the 3.5G appear isn't of the 3G on homescreen?

Thanks J.
I also have a dilemma... I sorta posted this question on another thread...but

Im with Fido and my contract ends in 2 months. March.
I called in to change the plan in October or November when I told them im thinking bout switching to Wind when they had their student special for 25$ for everytihng unlimited. So they gave me a retention plan:
Unlimited Local Minutes
2500 Texts
Voicemail and Call display
for 35$ / month

The problem I have is that im travelling and im ONLY jst text cuz i dont have long distance.. I dont think thats a good deal for 35$ if im just texting.
The area I am in now, Nelson doesnt have Wind or Moblicity...and after my contract is up, I will be in another small town somewhere else in Canada.

What should I do?

You should see if Fido still have the rentention unlimited North America talk and text for $50. It's unzoned so any calls made on the Rogers/Fido network would be consider a local call even in the small towns.

If you actually read the content from the posted link, it tells you to visit your nearest Wind store to have it reserved, smartass.

J____ 01-11-2011 04:39 PM

if your traveling alot to small towns, i would stick with fido. wind will be useless for you since you will be paying for the plan + 25 cents/min, 10cents/txt ontop. you can go to chatr if you want but not sure if they have free roaming. They also dont have data.

distanc3 01-11-2011 05:49 PM

Wind's site is 450$

Sounds to me like the 3rd party dealers are trying to convince you to pay more now for a 9780 before it's officially realized by the provider. Tell Wind see what they say about that particular dealer.

You will only achieve 3.5G on a data session if and when network capabilities and your hardware permit. 3.5G is not applicable to voice calls. Voice calls are only in 3G WCDMA.

FerrariEnzo 01-15-2011 08:07 PM

when i send a sms especially mms, my phone goes into 3.5G, as it says on the phone where it normally shows 3G

StylinRed 01-16-2011 12:22 AM

MMS

From the Network Destinations menu, create a new destination called "Media Messaging", by selecting Options > New Destination
Next, create a new access point called 'Wind MMS' and put it in the "Media Messaging" destination like this...

* Select "+ Access point" (Add new acc. pt.)
* At prompt "Automatically check for available access points" choose No, then at the Select access point: prompt, choose "Packet data"
* Set Packet data access point name to 'Wind MMS' and Destination to Media Messaging

Now you have to edit the Wind MMS APN settings...
From the Network Destinations menu, select "Media Messaging (1 access point)"

* Touch the Wind MMS APN to get to edit mode and set these values:

Connection name: Wind MMS
Data bearer: Packet data
Access point name: mms.windmobile.ca
Username: None...........................dont
Prompt password: No.....................edit
Password: ****...........................these
Authentication: Normal..................this2
Homepage: http://mms.windmobile.ca

* Now use Options > Advanced settings and set these values:

Network type: IPv4
Phone IP address: Automatic
DNS address: Automatic
Proxy server address: 74.115.197.70
Proxy port number: 8080 (Some people have said 8080 doesnt work for them and Wind told them to use 80)
and use Back to return to the Network Destinations menu.
Now power the phone off and on again.
Now tell the MMS Messaging system to use your new Wind MMS APN, by starting Messaging, choose Options > Settings > Multimedia message and change "Access point in use" to Wind MMS.
Now use Back to return to the Messaging menu, _then power the phone off and on again_.
Now you should be able to send & receive MMS.
worked fer me

MMS is packet data hence why it will show 3.5G. SMS is not a packet service.
