Orascom and T-Mobile are pretty big international companies. My guess is that they would have at least some influence on manufacturers.

I see the iPhone as their biggest obstacle. Besides the iPhone, T-Mobile and, say, TELUS have pretty similar smartphone lineups IMO.

regardless, the iPhone is not "dominant" enough on the rest of the world vs what it is in North America, it will not be hard for Apple to bite away the market share tho. Just wait and see. Big companies and willing companies are totally different

i would seriously think carefully about this. becuz there is no garauntee in terms of pricing due to no contracts, they could pull the plug on ur plans. no one knos until they operate for at least a year

their goal is to gain market share

No need to 'wait and seee' with Wind. If they treat you like crap, you can leave. If Rogers or Telus treat you like crap, you are fucked for as long as you're locked in with them.

I think if you're not currently under a contract, you should definitely go with Wind. Give them the traction they need to have an effect on the market. If they are really bad, just leave and sell your soul back to Satan

I dont. but if they treat me better than fido, i'll stay, if not i can just leave without waiting 3 years. Just yesterday i called in to ask fido about caller ID. My friend's on $40 city fido while mine is $45. Ok he signed up when it first came out within a onth for the $40 price, ok no biggy, but he's getting free caller ID while im getting charged so i called in and asked the agent if he can do something for me politely. He simple said no... so i asked how come he's getting it while i cannot as i've been with fido from day 1 as well, he said they treat every account differently, ok... I then asked if i can speak with retentions, the prick then completely changes his tone and started rudely accusing me saying how i know the 'internal' word for the department to keep customers and i am 'threatening' to cancel just because my friend is getting a better deal. I said no, there's a better deal and i wanted to see if i can get it. I felt like i was in a court room for christ sake being interrogated by a judge for murdering someone. I get told that he'll go have a chat with his colleagues in that department to see if they want to take my call, he puts me on hold and 10 mins later comes back to tell me they dont want to take my call and basically told me to fuk off without the fuk word. What a fuking cocksucker. I didnt even call in to bitch, even asked politely.

Hopefully they do something like that, leading more to follow.
In North America, the carriers have a stranglehold on distribution. Consumers here don't pay the full price of the phone. They're used to being subsidized, so retail phones don't exist like they do in Europe/APAC where you pop in a SIM and away you go. Most phones here get branded Rogers/Telus/Verizon/etc and sales go through the carriers, who won't subsidize and sell your phone unless you do their customizations.

Phone manufacturers would love to bypass the carriers and sell their phones wifi, voip, and everything fully enabled directly to the customer. As it is right now, they're kinda selling to the carriers who sell to the customer.

How many customers does T-Mobile in the US have? They're the only country that matters.

I still have that phone they launched back then. It's some bulky non flip one with a giant battery pack.

Okay I just googled and found it!

Clearnet PCS phone from Sony.

I was expecting crazy cheap plans, but it doesn't look like anything to get super excited about. (Except the unlimited mobile internet for 45$)

It'll be interesting to see how the other big name carriers respond though.

Just noticed something while reading Engadget. They were talking about the Google phone, and I noticed this blurb:

"worked on T-Mobile's 3G only (AT&T is limited to EDGE data)"

That means the Google Phone, at least right now, supports UMTS 1700. That means it should work fine on Wind when it is released. The Google phone is expected to be subsidized by advertising, as opposed to a 3 year payment plan.

This means you should be able to get a brand new Android 3G phone for between $100-200!

After reading this thread, I have two things to say to all of you:

WIND is not a saviour to the Canadian telecommunications industry. History will repeat itself.

Honestly, you might just wana call the retentions department directly 1888 259 3436.

But a heads up, Fido is trying to get rid of all the City Fido plans, so for them to give you free Caller ID, you better be prepared that they're gona make u switch plans just to give it to you for free.

And I seriously think they don't give a shit about City Fido users, they were making them renew for 3 years WITHOUT a subsidized phone, just to keep the plan without the SAF.

Looks like the HTC HD2 is coming to T-Mobile, so that means Wind should get it too (who knows).

yes leave with that $450 BOLD that you just bought right? and then go to rogers or whoever and sign a 3yr contract and pay another $200 for the bold? who's gonna do that? most people cry over $100 for a phone let alone $450 and then another $200 if they decide to leave.

yea i can feel that. They made me sign a 3 year contract 2 years ago when mine ran out to keep the city fido at $45, otherwise i woulda been paying $50 without contract.

no, you cant just buy anyone phone from anywhere and use it on wind. they have 4 phones right now.

bold - $450
maple - $300
gravity 2 - $150
U7519 - $130

a new customer has to fork out at least $130 to "try" out a network and if the service sucks...they're out of that $130. if they wanna sell it, they gotta find someone willing to take a risk on wind or someone using t-mobile.
