| Google Nexus One
So apparently it's official. Google is launching their self-branded phone early next year.
Here is a summary article on engadget: http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/13/t...-what-we-dont/
I'll probably wait to see what apple responds with next summer and buy whichever is better.

It'll be nice to see what the Android platform is supposed to look like finally. Hopefully this phone will be with little compromise.

^ I don't see how this is news either. it's almost the same as all phones running Android.
I do like the cleaner look on this phone though.

I do like the cleaner look on this phone though. | It's news because of Google implementing the OS. As Android is open source, developers can modify it to fit their needs, this is Google implementing it the way they wanted to see it done.

IMO, its big news because its a sign that Google is changing their strategy with Android.
They currently provide the OS, and the manufacturers decide which hardware to put it on. This means the OS has to be universally coded and modified for their specific hardware. I.e. HTC would have their own version of the OS...Motorola would have their own, and etc. The end result is many variations of the same OS.
This formula is what's used by Windows Mobile which resulted in a clusterfuck of WinMo iterations floating around and makes it hard to provide updates. Android was pretty damn close to following the same path.
Google now looks to be involved with hardware design as well, meaning a OS designed specifically for a device (aka: optimized). This is the same formula followed by the iPhone, Blackberry, Nokia.

^ it still is following the same direction if what you say is true. HTC would have their own version of the OS, so would Motorola if they decide to use it. the updates would only apply to the Google phone, not to the rest of the manufacturers that use Android.
IMO, it doesn't really change anything, it's just another version of the OS added to the ones floating around.
if Android remains open source, which is the point, developers can still do what they want with it. it won't be any different than having a G1, except it looks slightly different and the hardware is probably more powerful. just my thoughts.

Google now looks to be involved with hardware design as well, meaning a OS designed specifically for a device (aka: optimized). This is the same formula followed by the iPhone, Blackberry, Nokia. | That's exactly what excites me about it. Apple created their OS to run on the phone they created. With google, until now, the OS was used and modified to run on the hardware the manufacturers created. It seems to me that google will be able to better implement the software they want if they have control over the hardware it's used on.
The specs are quite impressive and even though it has the same processor (i think?) as the 3GS there is talk that it is either clocked faster or the OS is better optimized and it appears to run faster. I also am looking forward to seeing how good the 5M camera is. The droid was pretty disappointing as I find the pictures on the 3GS better so hopefully the Nexus has a higher quality lens.

Rumoured to be $199 unlocked starting Jan. 2 with a possible $100 rebate for "those with old and active Google accounts."
Hmm.

Hmm. | If it's really that cheap I may get it anyway. If that $100 is true (seems very unlikely) then I won't even hesitate. The GPS broke on my iphone 3g a week after the warranty ended and I would pay $100 easily for something with working GPS and would probably be happy to spend $200 for a faster phone. Can't wait to see the official pricing news.

ncie! this looks sweet. Im not sure about an iphone killer though, sure there are tons of phones out there with way better specs than the iphone, but the iphone will still be superior because of it's image to the general public and also the amount of aps support available for it.

who cares whether it's an iPhone killer or not?
If you like the iPhone, get an iPhone. There are so many iPhone users out there locked into 3-year contracts that it will never be "beat" within the next few years (unless they are willing to shell out $500+ for an "early upgrade")

I would buy it for the unsubsidized and unlocked price of $530 if only it worked on Rogers. I guess I'll have to wait until the summer for the new iPhone.

One of my GF's family friend who works for Google down in Seattle has been using this phone for about a year now. She didn't know that it was anything special so didn't look into it.
