Why didn't my airbags deploy? (pics) I was recently in a collision - the classic left turner got me. I was proceeding through an intersection and the other driver, who was going in the other direction, decided to wait until I was in his path to initiate his left turn. At least ICBC has declared him 100% at fault. I have front and side airbags. Why didn't either of them go off? It seems to me that either one or the other should have deployed. I was travelling at about 40 kph. You can see the damage in the pics below. There is significant suspension damage as well as unibody damage. This is a serious matter. If the car is repaired I don't want it to be a hazard to me or anyone else. http://i45.tinypic.com/v2xwgg.jpg http://i47.tinypic.com/vsnytu.jpg |
wearing seatbelts? |
I hit a wall twice and my airbags did not deploy until the car came to a stop. |
Airbags would've probably done more harm in your collision anyways. At the speed and impact it was probably better that the seat belt did most of the work. |
at least you're okay? If you're really concerned you should give your dealer a call. |
Did you hit your brakes? if so it's better than your air bags didn't go off, the seatbelt would have stopped you i was recently in an accident with my G35 and i was going about 50-60 km/h and a guy in front of me made a u turn i hit him dead centre. http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p...z/accident.jpg judging by the pics it didn't look like much damage, but the air bags went off. what happened was the sensor was dead centre behind the energy absorbers and triggered the bags to come on, i was already hard on the brakes so the seat belt stopped me, if anything the air bags did more harm when it blew my hand off the steering wheel. in your case, and in most Nissans, the sensors are in specific spots, so if the sensor doesn't get triggered it doesn't need to come off. plus it sucks to getting hit by an airbag, i had a yellow mustard looking bruise on my face when an air bag hit me a few years back, not fun. |
Yes, I was wearing seatbelts. I agree that it was probably best that the airbags didn't go off in this instance. My concern is whether there is a fault in the system that would be detrimental in a future accident. |
Your car realized you're too tough to die |

Front airbag sensors are usually in the centre of the front grille. |

prob didn't hit the sensor or anywhere near it I know some newer cars now have 2 sensors one on each side to help. |

If most japanese cars have the same SRS mechinasm, I would say that because the impact point is lower than the "frame" of the vehicle, the force of impact is not enough to deploy an airbag. [ WHICH is a good thing] I have heard a 2009 BMW335i that was struck by a cobble on the highway and EVERY airbags on the car were deployed. The exterior damage was just a small dent on the front bumper. |
In 'most' airbag systems, at least 2 sensors have to go off to ignite the airbag. you'll commonly have one on each front corner, but you also have a safing sensor inside the cabin to make sure it doesn't go off if someone kicks your bumper while stopped. (that video of the old lady hitting the fancy convertable at the crosswalk is sooo fake) you either weren't going fast enough to arm 2 sensors, or you hit at such an angle that a sensor didn't go off. Or your car has no airbags in it and whoever sold it to you screwed you. Hope that helps |
the SRS Generation airbags in the front will not go off unless Both front Airbag Sensors will go off. the Side Impact Airbags will not go off unless both side impact sensors go off... be lucky they didn't, that would instantly Write off your car. |

My car doesn't have airbags, it destroys the car it hits and i remain intact. |

it likely just got one of your sensors therefore it wasent enough to trigger the airbags to deploy |
Too bad no write off. |
i have your car too. the airbag will not go off in a corner collision. the sensors are in the centre side. unless you are 100% straight on, your front bags will not deploy. shameless plug: join our se-r club! check out b15sentra.net! |
Airbag sensors are mounted to the lower frame rails - the damage to your car is at the side of the fender - all of the force was absorbed into the fender and/or deflected into another direction. The airbags are designed to deploy only if the force is traveling directly through the passenger compartment of the vehicle. In most circumstances, the car needs to decelerate from 60-0 in less than 1 second for the computer to trigger the explosion. |

lol.. sorry mancini, that's nowhere close to enough damage to cause the airbags to deploy. although to be accurate as others have said, deployment depends more on HOW the accident happened, then what the damage appears like afterwards. |
