How could that thin piece of metal barrier went straight thru the firewall of the car? Or there isn't a firewall anymore since the engine is in the back? Still that area should be one of the toughest part of the car in order to protect the people inside....

Firewalls aren't armour plating, just relatively thin sheet to keep heat and fumes out of the cabin, and to provide some torsional rigidity to the car.
