Anyone got HTC Magic? I just upgraded my 4 year old phone to one through rogers promotion for $.99 cents.. great deal I must say!.. anyone have experience with this phone? I wanted it, because it seems to be similiar to iphone. Id like to know if I made the right choice.. also where can I buy a nice case for it? |
The leather case for it is pretty sweet, I've had people ask me where they can get one for their iPhone XD Otherwise you can get a soft gel case on eBay for like $10 shipped. I know one other guy who has one, and he runs stock firmware on it, I rooted mine and have a rooted Sense UI rom, basically making it an HTC Hero without the chin and camera. It's a great phone, though it lags a bit with bluetooth A2DP music lol. |
where can i get the leather case from? thanks |
There should be an official update that adds Sense UI. They advertise it all the time at least! |
good phone, but unfortunately it doesnt support a full system multitouch (if rooted, only a browser multitouch and a few others can be achieved, but not when typing, which can be PITA), which is a big thing to me when typing my personal preference off course |
if anyone has sense UI on there magic.. how is it? any lag, or features not working? also did you do it yourself or get it done by someone? |
I had myhero rom before, i guess you can say theres a little bit of a delay, but not much at all. xda-developers.com <---has everything you need to know about rooting/flashing/customizing your phone leather cases, head to Pacific Plaza on Cambie & Garden City, you can check out JP Cellular. If they don't carry any, there's 2 other stores in that plaza that carry universal cases |
I was talking bout the leather sleeve it comes with XD I've got a Rom based on the HTC magic update for HK Vodafone that skinnypupp is talking about. It's pretty awesome. Smooth and fast. Posted via RS Mobile |
I bought one end of august RETURN IT NOW!!!!!!!! unless you have no problem with forgoing your warranty to root your phone, Rogers has confirmed that they are not providing their android phones (magic/dream/eve) with any official updates. So we're not getting android 1.6 or 2.0 (72% of android users have 1.6 and up through updates from their carrier (except for droid users who got 2.0 out of the box)) http://androidforums.com/rogers/1064...update-12.html anyways, end rant, I was totally sold on the phone by the salesguy pitching to me that I would get android updates until the phone was no longer capable of running the latest release and now my phone is horribly outdated (I know I can root, but I bought the phone from Rogers so I could have a warranty) |
^When you got the phone for 99c, it's worth it imo. Sure another three years on Rogers but he can sell the phone later on and use that money to buy and unlock a new smartphone to use. :) Or he could just return it, cancel the contract and buy an HTC Hero from Telus for $99. Anyways, if you're stuck with it, nothing wrong with rooting it and playing around with the phone. There's a working 1.6 rom on XDA-Devs and a semi-functional 2.0 and 2.1 w/ Sense UI (both with no camera or bluetooth). |
like others have mentioned. If you want to update it, you'll have to Root it. If you only paid $0.99 for the phone, who cares about warranty. Just root the thing and enjoy. BTW, there is a known bug with the stock 1.5 firmware. If you have any network location (cell tower triangulation...not GPS) apps (i.e. google Latitude, Locale, location weather updates), after a while, the phone starts slowing down. I won't go into the details why it happens, but the quick fix is to disable network location, but that limits features of your apps. The issue was addressed in 1.6, but obviously Rogers won't be releasing it. IMO, Rogers really dropped the ball with Android. No paid apps and no support.... |
im confused.. so the HTC hero runs a 1.6 sense UI.. what is the 2.0 and 2.1?? which one should I get? Id like to be able to keep the camera and bluetooth if possible.. can the 1.6 do that? |

Basically Android 1.6, 2.0, and the upcoming 2.1 are all updated versions of the Android 1.5 os that improve on functionality (some apps require 1.6 and up), stability, speed, and reliability. It's like sp2 and sp3 for Windows XP. While other carriers in other parts of the world have given these updates, Rogers is not going to. It is still to be seen whether or not Telus will. But imo Sense UI is much better than the standard android 1.5, so I would get the telus HTC Hero, cause even if Telus doesn't provide any updates, you're still ahead with sense ui. The hero, spec wise is practically the same phone as the magic, except it has a 5mp camera instead of the 3mp on the magic, and it's got a 3.5mm headphone jack. And yes, it has bluetooth. |

Since the Magic and Hero are similar devices, it's possible to port 2.1 with Sense UI over for the Magic, but without proper support for the camera and bluetooth. There is also a 2.0 rom for Magic without camera support. The 1.6 rom I was talking about is fully functional. Camera and bluetooth work fine. It is plain 1.6, no Sense UI (which I'd rather have). |

or better yet, where i could get the leather case that usually comes with the phone, i lost mine. |
