So do you just call up insurance places and ask them if they have a certain license plate? Then you go there and pay $18 to buy the 2 plates and be on your merry way?

I'm picking up a new car in a month so do I just bring the 2 plates to the dealership?

Edison_Chen 06-13-2012 09:21 PM

If your buying a car at the dealership, the dealer will probably arrange an insurance agent to do the insurance when you pick up your car. If you currently don't have plates, the agent will bring some plates with them. They may or may not let you choose the number plates they have on them, depending on the agent.

Tip: if your sales person has a good relationship with the insurance agent, they might be able to maybe help keep an eye out for a perticular set of numbers

You can phone insurance places if they have certain plates, but plates are not simply bought. The only way you'll walk out of their office with a plate is if you register it onto a vehicle first. If you have plates lying around, then yes you can bring it into your dealership when you pick up your car. You'll save $18 because you wont need new plates.

"not easy to die" for 524

So if I don't have a vehicle, I can't buy the plate? I really want a plate with 000-_ _ _ ... and I'm also quite confused :D... I thought the dealership gave you free plates, or do they charge you the $18 anyways ?

Raid3n 06-16-2012 07:54 AM

fees relating to insurance and license plates have nothing to do with the dealership. it's all from ICBC

That's correct. You can't get a new plate without attaching it to a vehicle through insurance.
The $18 cost is there, hidden somewhere, whether your agent tells you or not.

Dealerships have insurance agents, but those agents are usually sourced out to an office nearby. They call and arrange for an agent to show up at the dealership when you are picking up your car. Some larger dealerships/auto malls might have an in-house insurance company that is located on site. They are not part of the dealership/auto mall though. They are just 'on-site'.

Once they cancel, can you take it right away? :)

iam_dan 06-18-2012 12:21 PM

I wish haha..
They go straight to ICBC's Surrendered Plates department after it's cancelled.
I honestly don't know what happens to the plates after that.. hmm

a world where he lives his life a quarter mile at a time. Nothing else matters: not the mortgage, not the store, not his team and all their bullshit. For those ten seconds or less, he's free.
