Planning to go to Hong Kong during the 2 week Olympic break.

Try silkway travel:

Plus Chinese travel agencies seem to cut into their commission deeper for more business. I think they do pricematches and beat them. Try finding price outside from multiple sources and compare.

Those prices are likely to be pure bullshit

It probably doesnt include the hidden fees. That's why I created this THREAD

I paid about 900 (all tax and fees in) for CX round trip to HK 2 or 3 years ago when Oasis emerged.

Gonna ask in here since it seems like the most relevant thread to my question.

I'm thinking of heading back to Hong Kong in November. Would it be too early to book a plane ticket seeing as its 10 months away? If so, how long should I wait until I start to really spend a lot of time looking for deals?

Thanks

Nice! What dates were you booking?

My folks want to go to HK at the end of March. There were a few good deals leaving out of Seattle that I'm keeping an eye out on.

There were flights out of Seattle that are a few hundred cheaper but you have to deal with the hassle of driving down there and back. I guess it depends on how much you're saving compared to flying out of Vancouver

syee 01-05-2010 10:39 AM

^ Yeah, they look to be about $300 cheaper.

The one I saw last week was kinda strange. It was about $600USD and flew from SEA-YVR-HKG. Strangely enough, if I take the SEA-YVR leg out and price the same flight from YVR-HKG, it was $400 more. Go figure?

In any case, $300pp savings x 2 people is $600. I still think it would be worth the drive or bus down there. The savings is almost enough to buy another plane ticket.

Must be the deal that was posted on RFD right? :D

I was thinking about that because I priced it for my trip in Oct-Nov and it was around $600 after tax flying with AC. The cheapest one with AC up here in Vancouver was $950. The cheapest with Cathay after tax was $1200.

I'm still hesitant on taking that deal because I did some research and cheapoair.com (the site that is advertising that deal) has a HORRIBLE rep.

haha, yes it is. I couldn't find too much on them either but I figured as the "middleman" on the deal, they couldn't screw it up too bad. They either book the flight (and give you the flight confirmation details) or they didn't. The sale is over already, but I was looking at other options (since the folks didn't want to leave on that particular day that the cheapest ticket was available)

The folks are looking to head out late March and stay until the end of April. Cathay looks to be a bit over $1000 with taxes in. US options are about $700 USD taxes in (flying on Delta/Northwest). With the additional restrictions imposed on inbound US flights, I may just buy them the Cathay flight instead (even though it's $300 more) to save the hassle.

I probably wouldn't book it just yet. Scope out the specials being offered (sign up for travel site newsletters and with the specific carriers like Cathay, AC, etc). If you have nothing 1.5 -2 months before you plan to go, then start booking.

Ch28 01-05-2010 11:32 AM

I just checked the Oct 15-Nov 6th date that somebody else posted in that thread and its actually CHEAPER on AC now @ $432

Is it even possible to be that cheap?!

I just did a quick check on your dates (Fri. Mar-26-2010 -- Sun. Apr-25-2010)

$657 with Delta and Northwest
$712 for AC
$977 for Cathay = $1,157.10 after tax

Is this on CheapoAir via SEA or local? I was using Mar 24 - Apr 30 although the folks haven't really firmed up their dates yet. I'm waiting for them to make up their minds on which day they want to go.

It's the SEA-YVR-HKG route

They'll have to fly out of Seattle cause there's no avoiding that but they can skip the last YVR-SEA portion on their way back. It depends on whether or not they'll have to check in luggage though. The luggage skips YVR and heads straight from HKG to SEA according to what people said on RFD.
