its so true though. although an amazing car, no one is goin to pay that much for a lexus. Ppl complain about buying a $100,000 nissan gtr, how about a 4 times the price tag toyota? Nsx was an amazing honda, but it was half the price of a ferrari. which made sense for ppl to buy it. this? no thanks, even if i had the money i'd buy a ferrari.
edit: the engine does sound fuking amazing however.

not trying to be biased or anything, but GT-Rs and Corvettes are the best performance bargains in the market today.
I know GT-R is only a Nissan, but Corvette and Viper are only a....

This car is more of an excercise of engineering as Jermey said. They never stated the reason for the price. Lexus contracted out almost nothing when building this car. They built their own freaking carbon fibre loom (only the 2nd loom of its kind in the world) to spin all the CF themselves, they got Yamaha to tune the acoustics of the cabin, among other things.
To consumers, all this shit probably doesn't matter, but I find it all very interesting and the pricing makes sense considering the extents Lexus went to to produce this car.

The loom and the manufacturing techniques will eventually trickle down to other production cars. It's only, like what Hamster said, an engineer's wet dream to show you what they CAN do when money is no object.
While the whole project is a red mark on the balance sheet, the R&D in it will eventually make a good profit.
The CF loom thing, for example, can make light weight and strong chassis which has been in the talk in Toyota for a long time to make cars more "efficient". Granted a lighter car is more efficient than a heavier one, so if they can build CF in house they can probably figure out a way to do this cheaply, by the economy of the mass.
But the LFA is out there as an exercise to show you what the company CAN pull off. As a publicity stunt more than anything.

But yeah, pretty much just Toyota flexing its guns

Pretty sad that Top Gear was being a complete badge-whore on this one.
If it's a great car, it doesn't matter what brand it is. GTR, ZR1, Viper, LFA, they're all great cars.

but as for the price though...Lexus is sort of like Mercedes rival, but a bit cheaper.
Mercedes was selling the SLR a bit more than LFA, so I guess the price sorta justifies.

don't think price is much of an issue ...there will always be a buyer since this is a very exclusive car from lexus .. its more selling the brand then the car

With only 500 units for the world to share, You're paying for exclusivity and rarity.
With quantities that low, price becomes irrelevant anyways. Whether Lexus sets the MSRP for $40K or $400K, we still can't get one, because some rich bastard will pay hundreds of thousands for one anyways.
