Buying a used R32 Golf, need help
 

My cousin is currently looking at an '04 R32 from the states and was wondering what he should be aware of when buying one of these. Are there any major problems this generation has compared to the '08s ? Did VW hammer out most of their electrical problems on the MKIV by then ? Thanks !

As a general rule, I don't recommend getting a first year run car (ie 2004 R32). I rather have a Mark5 R32. 2008 will be a second year run for the Mk5 R32. Mark 5 is always better than Mark 4.. well at least it doesn't have that stupid screwdriver key issue to start.

Just be aware that R32 is not officially imported into Canada so you might have problems getting R32 specific parts when and if you need them. So you are pretty much stuck with 3rd party specialty shops. (which for VW it is not a bad thing).

Technically, the MK4 came out in the UK around 2002. The US didn't get it until 2004. All R32s were built in the same plant. Like all MK4s, you may have issues with brake light switch, window regulators.. I have not read about coilpack failures that were imminent on the earlier 1.8T.

You should look for one that's stock, and one with a service SPECIFICALLY on the HALDEX differential. The 6spd gear box tends to grind in the cold, but people claim it's fixed if you were to switch to a Redline oil..
