Re: SA 2010 vs SA 2005 - the rulesets that I'm familiar with allow the most recent Snell Foundation rating and at least one older rating, so if you buy a SA05 helmet you should be good to go for a while yet. These other factors might help you with cheapness
- SA05 helmets
may be discounted due to newer SA2010 helmets coming out - more likely for lower-end helmets. I wouldn't count on heavy discounts for something like an Arai.
- If you get seriously into motorsports, you will likely want to replace your "first" helmet before its safety certification expires due to preference or wear. Who wants to wear the same smelly helmet for 10 years?
