yup. heard this on the news weeks ago. totally should be in permanent effect and the city should hand out tickets.

it just irritates me the lack of common courtesy that people display every day.

hold open a door for a stranger, no "you're welcome", etc. etc. *sigh*

i think the ones that arent disabled/handicapped, but park on those spots WITH a valid handicapped sign is worst. i know at least 1 person that does this, and he drives a manual.

there's a lot of ways for this to not completely work

example - my mom broke her leg last year, and when i went to lansdowne to pick her up after physio, i'd park in the handicap spot (with her handicap sign) so i could see her come out, and go to the front to pick her up. or i'd park in the handicap spot (so she wouldnt have to walk all the way to the car) and go inside to get her or something

now to people that didn't see the entire issue, i parked in the handicap spot and then just went inside or something

but i do agree, the handicap spots are being abused a lot. same with those odd malls that have expectant mother spots, etc.

but with any luck, they'll be able to check the validity (ie - if you have anybody in your family with a legitimate handicap sign, because they have to be registered) and then go ahead and hand out fines or whatnot

Well as long as you have the handicap sign you won't get reported I don't think... it's just targeting people without handicap signs who park in handicap parking spaces.

not really

placards are the signs

it makes sense though, handicaps signs aren't hard to get nowadays. i've seen countless people getting in and out of cars parked in handicap spots, and they're (physically) 100% fine, and alone

I'm glad they're doing something about the issue.

I drive my mom, who's 87 years old, to the doctor and shopping about once a month. She has the card and I use it. I never use the card if I am not driving her around. I've seen young people use their parents' card to park in designated areas. Not cool. I confronted one of them and tried to shame them into leaving. Their come back was, "We have the card, so we can park here." Can't really argue that, I guess. Still, not right.

As for the ratting people out comment. That's the exact reason behind the kind of society we live in nowadays. All the crime and violence we have is a result of people looking the other way and not seeing the big picture. Sure, handicapped parking may not be a big deal in the eyes of some people, but the attitude carries on to other things.

Littering, lying, cheating, stealing, etc. It all leads to bigger things.

Sorry. I'm getting sick and tired of people getting away with shit. Especially, when it causes problems for others.

The police couldn't be bothered with stuff like this. They have bigger fish to fry, so to speak. Stuff like this needs to be looked after by all of us. Little by little, it makes a difference. When I walk around and see litter and it isn't filthy shit, I pick it up. Just because I can. Who knows? One day, Vancouver might actually become a city of polite people again.

This reminds me of that Seinfield episode when they go to the shopping mall and park in the handicap spot. Hah, good episode.

So what disability actually warrants a handicap parking sign, is it only be issued to people with trouble walking or could someone with a disease that may not be so evident when you look at them qualify too?

If they legally have a handicap sign what can you really do

It doesn't take much, I know someone who has minor M.S. that has one, you'd never know by looking at the person although they never use it either...

heres the link that says what qualifies you to get a handicap placard.

seems pretty lenient to me, maybe they are the ones that need to tighten up on the criteria

Except then there would be huge public outrage.

I remember back when I was at BCIT, I noticed a lot of modified cars were parked in the handicapped spots. They had handicap decals too.

I remember this 1 silver RSX, he'd park in a bunch of different handicapped spots around campus all the time. The guy liked using his remote starter apparently. More than a few times I've seen it running while parked with the owner no where in sight. I even posted a picture of it in RS spotted, but surprise, it got deleted. The owner must've called in a favor here.

Kind of tempted to post it again..

i had a legal pass for 1 year and always had old foggies hassled me parking or people giving me the evil look. it was nice and all but getting hassled by people is not a real bonus. they just completely assume that young person just using a fake pass.. but really i have some spinal injury. even got a ticket at granville island for it. but they canceled the ticket eventually.

I always double park that motherfucker sideways in handicapped spots.

Seriously though, It would be nice to have one for parking at BCIT, I'm gonna try to scam one for 2nd year so I can leave half an hour later.
