To those of you in HK, do you file your taxes?

To those of you living and working in Hong Kong, do you guys file your Canadian taxes?

This is my first year working in Hong Kong, and I will claim non residency, but I made income at the beginning of the tax year in Canada. I also have dividends and interest gains from Canada. I am pretty sure I won't have to pay any taxes, but im not 100% certain.

I was told that many people don't even file a tax to Canada. They don't even bother with it. But I am still getting income from within Canada, so I don't want to owe money to the CRA.

So for those of you who do your taxes, how do you guys do it? Download the package and then mail it in? Click the box that says non residency and that is it?

read the non-residency declaration form...you can claim non-residency only under
certain circumstances. You have to show you are not tied with Canada...for example,
you can't say you are studying and working in HK, then you are not planning to file any
tax.

I don't have any of the primary ties with Canada, only drivers license, bank accounts, medical card and some stocks. From what I read from other people is that as long as you don't own property being rented out to faqmily, it should be ok to declare non resident. The thing is, I only moved to HK halfway through the tax year, more then 180 days. So what about my previous income? And my dividends back in Canada?

Do you file your taxes? Many people I have talk to don't bother and the CRA has never asked talked to them.

If you have any income in Canada, you need to file tax. If you claim non residency, you can't have any ties back home, including bank accounts or anything.

I read on many forums that people have bank accounts, drivers licenses, bank accounts and medical card (obviously they don't use the medical card) back in Canada and was able to claim non residency. I have not seen one person been denied as those are mainly secondary ties and not primary.

Then I have been told to just not file a claim at all from other people.

The question is, do YOU guys file your taxes?

I suppose you could withhold the information from CRA, and if people on the internet are doing it successfully, why not? But be aware that it is technically fraud. I'd recommend a good read through their site first.

Yes, I file my taxes. But my case is probably different from yours, since I don't have a job

Well if you don't file a claim since you have no Canadian income and you are a non resident, I don't see how the CRA can fuck with you since you owe them nothing. It's not like those people who don't file a claim are actually living in Canada, they are really non residents with Canadian citizenship. As non residents, we do not have to pay taxes on our global income unlike Americans.

The only problem is, I have had half a tax year worth of Canadian income and also small dividends and such from my Canadian investments.

You have to give up everything including your DL.. you will be stuck with N stickers when you get back.

Actually you are supposed to declare your global income, it is just the wording of CRA is weird.

You can sell pay the taxes, sell the investment.. and pay taxes on those too.. as long as you have done all that, you are free and clear to declare no residency. Just remember to buy health insurance when you come and visit.

The best is for you to consult a tax lawyer.

I thought HK has a tax treaty with Canada, and if your primary income is in HK, you only need to pay that 11% Tax?

Anyways, best bet is to talk to your accountant.
