LOL, I still haven't given in. I have EP 1-3 downloaded in HD but I think I'll wait until about episode 6 before I start watching. So much better watching a bunch in a row.

What? I loved episode 3. I mean, some of the seriously awesome episodes of Band of Brothers are like Market Garden but some of the most character development happens when they're not fighting at all like in the first episode when they're training at Curahee. The last episode at the Eagle's Nest is awesome as well and there's like only a few shots fired.
The Pacific chose to start with action right away in Guadalcanal so this episode is the...no-action episode.

I don't need to see bullets to enjoy a show. You're right, those episodes of BoB were great when they weren't fighting. However, that was because the material they chose to show was interesting. The crap with Leckie, his fling, and her family were boring. I'm biased though, as I don't care what happens to Leckie.
Basilone, however, is showing more fortitude. Nothing compared to what Donnie Walhberg showed in BoB, or even the doctor whose name I can't remember right now. Basilone is the only good thing in the series right now.
I find it hard to respect the characters in The Pacific. When they're not fighting, they're all ragged and dirty. I mean, look at that scene where they walked into the stadium, all of them in their pajama-like torn uniforms. Sure, it may be realistic and factual, but it doesn't make me sympathize for all they've been through, it just disgusts me. Even Winters, when he was in that forest, he still had time to shave in the freezing cold. The show is portraying a lot of story that people don't want to see.
They did too good a job with Band of Brothers.

That's the thing though...the guys in Band of Brothers were an elite squad, Easy Company, in the 101st and were possibly one of the most famous of the entire war for their part in D-Day, Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge, Bastogne, and taking the Berchtesgaden. Easy Company consisted of roughly 150 men.
The 1st Marine Division that's in the Pacific is 20,000 dudes so I don't know how they're going to focus on too many specifics. We can look forward what I assume are battles in Cape Gloucester, Okinawa and the Battle of Iwo Jima but again, these dudes are grunts. They're front line fighters compared to the paratroopers in Band of Brothers so you can expect them to be messier than them.
That and Winters is just a classy dude despite the penchant for badassery. He's still alive, by the way, at 92. Lynn Compton (Neal McDonough...the huge dude) is 88. Other Easy Company officers like Ronald Speirs died a few years ago and Donnie Walhberg's character, was Carwood Lipton, who died in 2001. As said in the series, Nixon (Ron Livingston...dude from Office Space) died in 1995 and Sobel in 1987.
Actually, quite a few of those bad mofos are still alive. Malarkey is 88. Gonorrhea is 86. Shifty (the sniper dude) is 86. Randleman is 82. Heffron is 86.

Remember that the series started with Leckie leaving his unloving family to join the war. With the Greek family he really felt like he was accepted, loved, and believed he had a bright future ahead of him. When Stella took that away because she was afraid of him dying he was choked since he had a taste of what a good life could be and it was now gone. Quote:

The Pacific campaign was a much different war than the European theatre, and the Marine's were a different breed than the Army (as already evidenced in Pt II when they go as far as to steal supplies from the Army since the Marines had nothing). The fact that they look so ragged and dirty shows what the Guadacanal jungle did to them physically and mentally. Half the battle in the Pacific wasn't about the enemy, but was about fighting disease and other jungle obstacles that didn't exist in the European theatre. I can't believe this has the opposite effect on you and makes you not feel for them.

They did too good a job with Band of Brothers. | Watch BoB again. I recall Malarky having a pretty thick beard in, I think, episode 6.
I don't think it has anything to do with how "elite" they are. It's just personal preference whether they feel like shaving or not.
Winters was a Battalion commander during the episode where he was shaving. He's not watching the front of the lines or anything, just sitting in his tent area.

Man, episode 3 was pretty good in terms of character development. There is always a reason for the events that happened in episode 3 that will foreshadow things down the line. If it was all battles and blood all the time, THAT would be boring to watch.
Quite frankly, what draws me to this series like BoB did is the characters. Everyone knows what happened in history. It's how abouts they did it that makes it interesting.

Marines VS easy company isnt a comparison at all really
Marines are always the down dirty first-line warriors, while air-borne, army, etc. are the more formal well greased war machine
the remark on how the last episode may effect leckie is interesting, i think if anything he'll probably go all out now since he figures the people closest to him maybe ever even doubted him

A definite disadvantage to downloading TV shows is they rarely include subtitles. For a show like The Pacific, where there's a lot of dialogue, a lot of what they're trying to convey in their conversations is lost because of background noise, mumbling, or unfamiliar phrases. I had the same experience with Generation Kill and Band of Brothers. The dialogue in GK was so tough to follow sometimes, that I could only hope for actions scenes just so that I wouldn't feel so left out on what's going on.
Just out of curiosity, who else here looked up "enuresis'"?

I agree with you, in shows like these, especially if you really wanna take in everything, subtitles is a must.

I think episode 6 is the end of the war action for Leckie. Interesting that we didn't see the "Turkey Shooter" this episode. Probably cause machine gunners didn't have a prominent role in this action, however mortars & demolitions did (sledge).

Ep7 was good.
Gross that that marine was trying to take his teeth out while he was still alive.
Why didn't Snafu let Sledge pull out the teeth?
