Problems after selling car?

I just sold my car today and 15 minutes after transferring title, the seller calls and says he's on the side of the road and car completely died on him. Its an old car 1997 talon with turbo, and he states it just died and check engine light came on. Before transferring title, we went for a drive together for 30 including highway and had no problems at all. I guess I will have to wait until we see what codes it pulls to see what wrong but am I liable for anything? If I didn't sell the car today it wouldve been me tomorrow and the car showed no symptoms of anything going wrong. I'd appreciate any helpful insights, thanks

Tell him,

Too bad so sad.

Its unfortunate that it died right after he bought it. But the car could have just as easily died on you or anybody else.

If you had him sign a contract saying that the car is sold "as is" and anything that happens after you transfer titles it is not your responsibility, then you would not be liable for anything.

If the guy goes to where you service your car (if it is a dealership) and find out that they have on file that your car has major problems that need to be addressed, yet you neglected to fix them and sell your car without disclosing them, I believe that there can be legal repercussions after that.

But if you honestly did not know what happened to it, then I'm sure you guys might be able to come to a mutual agreement to split the cost or something, if possible.

Most people would probably just say too bad so sad, but morally I would help out or else I'd feel really bad... but that might just be me.

Buyer Beware.

Title of the vehicle has been transferred, keys and money exchanged.

End of story.

i agree with the "buyer beware" saying. which is very true for buying anything used.

but on a side note about the written contract-
if YOU were to buy a used car, and the owner asks you to sign a contract saying "as is", would you be hesitant to buy? or what would go though your head? Whereas just exchanging money for keys without any written contract?
cuz i know for me, i would thinnk that theres something fishy i the owner asks me to sign a contract saying i know im buying the car as is.

It may seem fishy, but might not always mean that the cars bad though, the guy could just be playing it safe so the buyer couldn't come back and bite him in the ass with a problem that the new owner produced.

When I buying my first car through Craigslist, the owner gave me a contract to sign, I thought it was a bit fishy at first, but I've already test driven the car, and my dad gave it a quick mechanical inspection, and nothing seemed to be wrong, so we went ahead with the deal.

Up to when it was totaled, I've had no problems with the car, even took it on a few roadtrips with no problems.

I have been on his end, except it was right after I took the keys from the guy. So there was no doubt it was NOTHING I had done, I just just been ripped off. You can be a good guy and help him out, or you can say too bad so sad. Chances are, its a turbo Talon, he was ripping on it. Still, its up to you. Tell him to take it to a shop and you can decide from there what you want to do, or you can just wipe your hands of it.

If there were a contract between you and the buyer saying that if anything happens to the car after selling it, its not your problem. Then well, self explanatory.

legally, you have no obligations.

morally, it is up to your conscience.

Just take note of Niteraven's first line, disregard the second, no need to be a moralfag

Look at it this way.

Scenario 1:You help him out, best that will come out of it is you don't have to pay anything but will have taken the effort and time to "assist" out of moral conscience.

Scenario 2:You don't help him out, best that will come out of it? You don't have to pay anything, you will not have spent the effort and time to "assist"

tl;dr there is no benefit to help him out in this situation imo

If everything was in good working order before you sold the car to him, than he probably revved the shit out of it after he bought the car.

+1 for people saying he very easily could have taken the car, pulled onto the 1st street away from your place and ripped on it (I know I probably would with a car I just got!) and mis-shifted or over-revved or whatever... kaboomed it... too bad for him

thanks for all the input everyone. feeling a bit better about it. the car is throwing a code and sounds like its in limp mode. since i do have an obd scanner, i'm going to give him a hand tomorrow and check the code, after that, its not my car anymore! It was probably just bad timing with something that was about to go (which there was no sign of to me before hand, or the both of us while driving the 30-45 minutes together).
