| Zoompass to Turn Your 2010 Domestic Phone into a 2003 Japanese Keitai: Wave to Pay!
Finally. FinallyFinallyFinallyFinallyFinallyFinally.
The day is finally here that one can start paying in style. Heard of PayPass? You might've heard of my complaints about how idiots at Tim Hortons hide the terminal because patrons are afraid of it. Nonetheless, soon we might be able to stick a Zoompass Tag on the back of our phones (or inside of the battery cover, as it were), then wave it over PayPass terminal to pay for our double-doubles and at Superstores, grocieries.
I, for one, can't wait. http://www.mobilemag.com/2010/03/08/...le+Magazine%29 Quote: Zoompass Tag turns your Canadian cell phone into a touchless MasterCard Swipe your ZoomPass tag module to make a transaction.
It sounds very similar to some systems you may have seen overseas, but it seems that the “use your cell phone as a payment system” technique is being fully transferred over to the Canadian marketplace. Following up on Zoompass from EnStream is the new Zoompass Tag.
Bell Mobility, Rogers, and Telus are all on board with this new technology, since they are a part of the joint venture known as EnStream LP. With ZoomPass Tag, you effectively tap your cell phone at a point of sale machine and the payment goes through in matter of seconds.
Your mobile phone, with the aid of a special sticker, is transformed into a virtual credit or debit card. This works with the PayPass system that you may have seen at places like Tim Horton’s and Superstore. Since it is based on Mastercard, it is no less secure than using the conventional piece of plastic and it is completely contact-less.
The ZoomPass Tag is currently going through a three-month pilot project and they will evaluate the results at the end of that period. What makes the ZoomPass tag special is the mobile application that you will use to track purchases, without that it’s just as good as any other key fob.
Mobile payment services are expected to grow to 103.9 million users worldwide in 2011, according to Gartner Research. ZoomPass Tag on the backside of an iPhone. ZoomPass App on an Android HTC smartphone. | |

I hope you can put the sticker inside the phone and have it still work (too bad iphone users!). That thing is hideous.

I'd rather have a octupus style card here for Canada. Something that goes into your wallet that can be used to pay for transit and groceries, etc.

Difference is that instead of reloading it, it's attached to your credit card account.

+1 i rather have octopus card. If you lose your paypass your fucked more than if you lose your octopus card....
-lose paypass, you need to freeze your acc then set up a new watever blah blah blah
-lose octopus card, you just call in saying you lost it and they freeze the card and you can just open a new card... I think you can even transfer the money on the lost card onto the new one since your name etc is linked onto the card number? (?) I just heard that recently...
oh yea, octopus card is more universal too Bus fare, parking meter, mcdonalds, grocery shopping, vending machine, almost anywhere.
BUT, this is kind of a first step...

Well, hopefully the zoompass application will be available on more platforms so at least we won't get that ugly sticker.
I can't get over how ugly that sticker is

Um, I don't think the application will magically make your phone work as a Zoompass?

It displays a barcode with your Starbucks Card info. I'd hardly call that "becoming" a Starbucks Card. |

yay, now my keitai can be a 2003 keitai==.
Why don't we have an octopus style system here? I know about the paypass system, but I never see anyone that supports it.

I think it's a great idea. And it shouldn't make too much of security hassle if it requires to turn on the apps before being able to scan it and mandate password when trying to turn on the app. Or even easier, setup a limit of the money can be scanned, only up to a limit the "sticker"holder set up for.
This could be very convenient. Protection wise, sure nothing is unhackable, but with pin to turn on app and limit expense on scan account, the loss that can occur after the phone being lost/stolen is really minimum. And people with enough knowledge and expertise to hack a system this complicated isn't interested in your 25bucks per scan (maximum amount per scan set on most of WAVE cards)

Also with Octopus, you will ALWAYS lose whatever you had preloaded. But now, most people just link their Octopus cards to their credit cards anyways.

For PayPass, much like the rest of the credit cards now, you need a signature for purchases over $25. Unless they're really really stupid and buy a grand of Timbits AND the cashier doesn't ask to see the back of the card...your being-screwed-ness is relatively limited.
