I sold my japanese car to buy a hyundai, and if I was in the mood for a small SUV I'd pick a Soul over a cube or whatever scion calls it's box.
If you need to know why people suggest a Genesis, you need to get your head outta your ass.
Kai - Soul
Nissan - Cube
Scion - xB
Honda - Element
sooo many boxes

Plus if you pay attention to motor sports you will know that Hyundai has been upping their preformance and really want to start delveloping cars that can compete. For example in WRC, when they enter I laughed soo hard at this cheap car company trying to run with the big boys but after they started to constantly break into the top 10 as well as beat out Mitsubishi for 4th place in the manufacturers' world championship standings you have to give them some credit.
I would never buy a Hyundai but now with the Genesis I would consider it. especially so in a couple years when/if their build quality is proven

GF bought brand new 2005 brand new nissan sentra GXE loaded for $30000+ because everyone and the moms drove a honda and or toyota.she wanted the "uniqueness".i tried to convince her to buy an RSX , civic si, or a corolla at the time but she wouldnt listen.
she Drove it for 125,000 hwk k's. after 4 years headgasket blew.shocks blew. starter went. stereo broke. exhaust leak.nissan quoted 3000 to fix headgasket.fixed it for 1000 somewhere else.
we tried to trade in the car to same dealership we bought it from (morrey nissan). they offered us 1500 on a trade in for another used car. car depreciated over 90% which bullshit. now shes out 28000 G's of lost depreciation.
my dads 1990 corolla has over 350,000 with no major maintenance over $200 at a time. he paid 13000. and cost of ownership is still going down.
lesson learned
heres proof of the garbage they sell.its not only her
^
the 2005 is based on the b15 build, which is very different from what the OP's gf is looking at. the gxe has a different engine as well. the OP's gf is looking at the qr25de.
OP, tell your gf to test drive it first. i'm very happy with my se-r.

that is a sad story, but u never mentioned if the car was regularly maintained. unlucky perhaps.
i drive a 20yr old nissan that makes 300+ boosted hp and driven hard.
the only thing i've had to replace was the alternator.
there are always horror stories no matter the manufacturer

The Genesis 2.0T is not even worth comparing to the MS3.
JDM > korean brands any given day
the 05 styling sentra was known for numerous problems. Friend had a SER none spec V, and it was nothing but a pain in the ass. The latest Sentra i heard is a huge step up over the last one tho
korean cars are starting to get good, just like how japanese cars were during the start of the 80s till 90s..
back then, it was the same thing. american domestics > japanese crap.
japanese cars are decling in appeal and quality over the last couple of years, while Koreans are going up. its a cycle and a matter of taking turns. next thing we know, Korean cars will be well established like japanese cars of 90's till 2000s, then Chinese cars will be the next korean cars etc.
time will tell. but so far the koreans are doing pretty well, considering back in 85' their Hyundai Pony was absolutely crap. 25 years later we have the Genesis and its a huge step forward for 25 years.
and back on topic: yes, i also had a friend with that B15 style sentra. had a mid trim model.. wasnt a gxe. something else.. not the the XE either. it was pretty crappy for a japanese sedan of that class: crappy build quality, bad gas mileage, minor problems and poor resale value. new one looks wayy more sorted out, but i have no idea. time will tell.

dude just dont even worry about explaining the facts of korean car development to mugen_evolution, he will never understand an will most likely be a hater for life, waste of time, its like going up to one of those 454 big block v8 slick tire domestic draggers and saying your nissan gtr is better

LOL, I was comparing the 3.8 TP with the MS3. Yes, they are about equal, however, MS3 has better handling. (completely unbiased opinion as I don't care for either car.)
As long as she's driven it and likes it. Might be worth reading some of the more technical forums: http://allsentra.com
Hopefully that site is still up. 2002+ SE-R websites have a funny history of boom and bust and site owner saying 'f**k this'.
If she doesn't mind having loud car, I'd suggest replacing the exhaust manifold with a header just to be safe. Though if she doesn't drive it hard, it probably doesn't matter.
As long as she likes it thats all that matters. I've got a 2008 which is pretty much the exact same as the 2010.
As for reliability I havent had any problems with my car, and I know the CVT transmissions were now given a 10 yr warranty based on customers complaining how much they cost to repair. The only real problem I have with it is the lack of aftermarket parts *facepalm*
2 things I liked about the car when I test drove it were the good low end torque, and the sound system
For the price its a good car, just dont get black
