*** BREAKING NEWS ***

March 2, 2010 *** SOURCE: Wind Mobile Inside Employee ***

As of the above date, it has been confirmed WIND Mobile's anticipated date of launch for Vancouver will be late April early May. All plans will remain as listed on the website but Wind Mobile will be introducing a couple of new "basic" handsets for those who want to stick with affordability while being able to utilize Wind Mobile's great offerings.

Wind Mobile will continue to provide "offerings" to those making the switch to show their confidence with the network and to help ease the financial burden some may face when making the switch due to contract obligations.

To date and identical to the original Microcell launch, Wind Mobile will cover all areas from Horseshoe Bay to Chilliwack and continues to improve on coverage and expand on a daily basis. Towers are already operational in Whistler and it's just a matter of flicking a switch to make them fully operational.

When launched, I will be porting over my monthly number I have with Virgin Mobile and will be paying an ECF to Rogers in order to move my business number over. I had the pleasure over the course of the Olympics to utilize a Wind Mobile Blackberry Bold 9700 while in Whistler (as towers were operational - for testing purposes) and must add the voice quality is phenominal and comparable to that of a land line.

Like any new entrant, I anticipate issues but for the amount paid and services offered, Wind is well worth the switch! I also am a firm beleiver if issues arise, they will be addressed quickly and should not disrupt any business operations I may have.

WELL VANCOUVER... IT'S BEEN A LONG WAIT BUT FINALLY WE WILL HAVE REAL CHOICE!!! NOT JUST PRICE FIXING BY THE BIG-3 WELCOME WIND MOBILE WELCOME!!!

wonder if i can keep my number switching to wind

^ Why not? CRTC made it possible for you to keep your #.

bcrdukes 03-15-2010 02:40 PM

Amazing.

Speech quality on 3G is better than that of a landline. This person is either a real moron and/or a very bad liar.

Uh, is it not still true that Wind locks their phones such that you can ONLY use WIND branded phones (i.e. phones registered in their system) and unlocked phones won't work?

Greenstoner 03-16-2010 07:50 AM

whats so good about wind and where are they from? srious question

TOPEC 03-16-2010 09:17 AM

some unlock phones will work just like it will with the other carriers. however, just like the other carriers, if it doesnt work, they cant troubleshoot it since those "grey market" phones were never meant for their network.

not really a choice when their network is so new. expect a lot of dropped calls and be aware of their "home area." its been well documented on the howardforum site.

ya that "home zone" thing is confusing me.

and looking at their plans, it's $15 for unlimited wind-wind within the home zone, and only 100 calling minutes for all else, so in other words, all ur friends needs to be a wind user for this "cheap" plan to be effective.

then the next plan up is the $35, which is basically unlimited calling when ur within the home zone, then add data plan of $35 for unlimited internet. that comes up to $70 before tax, it doesnt seem that cheap in the end.

a lot of people will switch just so they can say FUCK YOU to rogers, telus, bell and fido for whatever reasons. its kind of stupid in the end, because at least the 4 main carriers have reliable service and most of those people already have those good retentions deals. they'll try out wind, get pissed off at the shitty service etc etc and end up back with rogers or who ever with a more expensive plan. theres my 2cents

$70 for unlimited voice and data including tethering with a laptop seems cheap too me.

ya its actually not bad at all, only thing you need to take into consideration is call quality and dead zones etc.

when your outside your home zone, it's 25cents/min, 15cents/text, 10cents/25kb data. So pretty much it's like roaming from fido/rogers/bellus but still alot cheaper. If you go into the US with wind, you only pay 25cents/min to call canada or us, which is ALOT cheaper than what fido/rogers/bellus would charge you atm

bui95 03-16-2010 10:37 PM

unlimited data isnt really unlimited. once you reach 5GB, they throttle your usage and slow your @ss down. and then there's the port blocking. took this from the howardforums

"For my personal use and work use I connect to IMAP, SMTP, OpenVPN and SSH services on a daily basis and the N900 gives me a fantastic platform to do these things from anywhere.

However immediately I ran into every single service I use being blocked. I had to change the ports that many services run on to be inside the range of "acceptable" outbound ports that WIND Mobile allows. Frankly that's ridiculous, and I'm paying for an unlimited data connection - let me use it like an Internet connection.

So after wasting a bunch of time debugging which ports were available (25, 80, 443, 993 and 5060 for the record) I complained through multiple routes to WIND staff. Most seemed receptive and apologetic, and took notes about my complaints and the exact details of which ports and IPs I was trying to connect to."
