Probe As Video Shows Lorry Shunt Car At 60mph
3:41pm UK, Thursday March 18, 2010
Damien Pearse, Sky News Online
Police have reopened an investigation after amazing footage emerged of a lorry careering at 60mph along a motorway with a car trapped sideways on its front bumper.
The video shows a trucker thundering along the A1(M) near Wetherby, West Yorkshire, seemingly oblivious to the car under its cab.
The lorry is filmed by another motorist for several seconds, with sparks flying from the blue Renault Clio.
The haulage company - Arclid Transport - has confirmed that the video is not a hoax and that the lady driver in the Clio "got out and walked away".
An incident did happen along that stretch of the motorway and we opened an investigation and reported the matter to the police. Having seen the video we have reopened that investigation.
Spokesman for Arclid Transport
A spokesman for the company said an investigation had been launched into the "accident" and that police had been informed.
West Yorkshire Police said officers were aware of the video at the time but in the wake of new evidence they are reinvestigating the collision.
A spokeman said: "The matter has today been passed to our major collision inquiry team and inquiries are ongoing."
In the video the lorry is first seen travelling towards the camera.
The lorry motors on, oblivious to the car under the cab
A passenger in the car with the camera screams: "He hasn't seen it" - as the truck motors past with the car still locked onto the front.
An Arclid spokesman told Sky News Online: "An incident did happen along that stretch of the motorway and we opened an investigation and reported the matter to the police.
"Having seen the video we have reopened that investigation."
The spokesman added: "As far as I'm aware the lady driver got out of the car and walked away unharmed."
Mystery surrounds how the Renault Clio got there and why the lorry driver failed to notice.
unbelieveable... something right out of a bourne supremacy movie imo.
