Interesting article on speed limits.

http://blog.motorists.org/speed-limi...ll-over-again/

I know this is about american highways it still carrys over to our highways too.
I really think its time they rethink the speed limits on our highways.

Some of the "top 10 articles" on the side are pretty interesting too.

u mean to only 2-3 lane highway we have here in BC? i dont think most people will be able to handle the increase if any.

instead of increasing speed, put in a extra lane that would help.

yeah people will still go over the speed limit. I remember my socials teacher said people go over speed limits because they can. He used going over the speed limit as an example of how laws are meant to be broken.

Imo the speed limits should definitely be increased if not removed. Its not speed that kills in my mind, its stupidity. Drive within reason and there's no problem. But I guess a lot of drivers are bad enough that an increase would probably make things worse.

I'm curious when were the speed limits put in place?

I do notice that whenever I drive 40-45mph in a 35mph zone in Washington I get passed

^ would be catastrophic with the average skill of vancouver drivers
that's not really needed since our highways aren't as cruicial as it is in europe/us

I find its not speed that causes all the problems on the highways....

It's the people that insist on driving slower than the posted speed limit and refuse or ignore you approaching in the fast lane behind them.

ya speed really isn't the issue here.. its all the people that touch their brakes for no reason at all while cruising, which leads to a chain reaction of people behind them touching their brakes, then traffic starts to back up..

I love driving in the states... the speed limit feels just fast enough! 80km/h in Canada is only going to force everyone to be speeding.

Did you even read the fucking article?

1) The highways were designed for cars to go 5-10 mph FASTER then the current speed limit.
2) The highway speeds were put in place based on 1950 car technology. Tires, suspension, brakes, aerodynamics, safety systems, etc are all way way way way more advanced then they were back then.

It is dumb to believe that raising the speed limit up to something like 80 mph would suddenly cause a bunch of accidents. In fact all that would happen would be a drop off in profits from tickets by the police.

80km on hwy 1 is a joke, real bad one too.

Like seriously, who the hell does 80km on the hwy. Hell ppl drive faster than that in school zones.

have anyone actually drive 80km on no.1? it feels like u are crawling...

laws are meant to be broken, ESPECIALLY this one. Hella lame...
everyone does 100-120km including me...

You know what the problem is? it aint the speed, its dumbass drivers that got nothing better to do but to switch lane to the fast lane, even if they are driving perfectly fine in their slow ass lane without any cars in the front. I was like WTF!!!! u come into the fast lane to block everyone behind ur slow ass pos

The Coquihalla was designed to sustain speeds of 150 kph.

As for the autobahn. Forget it. They don't have to deal with the short on/off ramps we have and their road surfaces aren't as pitted from heavy vehicles. That's not mentioning driver training requirements, which should be more comprehensive here irrespective of the speed limit.

On the other hand I'm somewhat glad that the speed limits are reasonable. I spend too much money on gas already and raising the highway speed limit significantly would have a negative impact.

What level of government sets the speed limit anyways?

The other thing to consider is the cost. We'r gonna have to spend a lot of money to shut the hippies up.
