Cool concept. Wouldn't insurance etc be an issue? Not everybody knows how to use a hoist properly, I could imagine someones car falling off due to it being raised improperly.
Maybe there are a few people working in the shop that will ensure that a car is properly aligned to the posts on the hoist? If it was basically, free reign without any supervision, I would guess all hell would break loose.
For me, 20 bucks+filter and oil to do an oil change myself sounds reasonable since I lack an oil drain and as I've mentioned before, strata rules say that I can't change my oil in my parking space, or I get a $40 fine.
There was a 5th Gear epi that did a "review" of sorts about a place like that in London. Cool idea, the UK concept went a step further and had tool/parts rentals/for sale at the location.

Shopped charged me $80 to install a new radiator which I could have easily done myself but I lack the space.

so someone actually did this eh... i wonder if they actually have insurance for this... it's not just about having a car fall on someone... if anyone gets hurt in this place doing ANYTHING, they can sue the owner...
I'm sure they've thought of everything.. No one can be that foolish in starting up something this risky without taking the measures to protect themselves.
They probably make you sign a waiver before they allow you into the shop premise.
They can prove that they did all the measures to ensure a safe facility. Operating a lift doesn't require a license, anyone can operate one.
I think the agreement they can have going on is just the rental of space. In that space it includes a lift. Would it be similar to renting out power equipment - fork lift? The rental company can't be sued if the operator kills himself on the fork lift? Or a staple gun - home depot sort of thing?

well the problem here is that if someone gets hurt ON THEIR PREMISES, they can sue them. If you take a nail gun and shoot yourself in the foot at home depot, you can sue home depot... similar concept.

Actually, thats like a wet floor sign, they warn you that you can slip if your not careful and it pretty much nullifies anything that they try to get from the company. Doesn't matter if its on their premises, if that was the case I could goto a random home and slip and hurt myself and go sue them because it was on their property.
Also, you are using your own tools and I'm pretty sure that they wont let you operate something if they dont think your being safe. Its not like they're going to let a bunch of blondes in a convertible merc, start trying to do their own oil change.

well if someone is a fucking retard they shouldn't be using a lift or working on a car in the first place.... so who cares.
Considering a typical injury claim is 20k for costs.. just getting a few of these line up a year, where you will have to pay to defend whether the case is with merit or not.. Perhaps you have deep pockets, but most small businesses I know that makes less than 1 mill a year don't have that in reserve.

Hahaha ya right you wish! Theres a tire dealer in Richmond who imports chinese made tires. No one wants to insure him unless he pays big dollars (since they take on the liability of a manufacturer). He is operating with ZERO insurance.....one tire blow out and he's lost his business.
Please dont ever assume that people operate their business's with proper insurance. Thats just not smart!

also another thing i thought of. if people dont have the space to work on their cars within their own premises, chances r they dont/wont have the tools, so renting the hoist without tool rental is useless.
for example, if i want to install some coilovers yet i dont have the space to do it, i go rent their hoist and they provide the air, yet i wont have an air ratchet/impact gun to use to undo the seized bolts. am i suppose to go and buy one?

well i have all my own tools since i do all the work on cars myself. but i dont have a garage to do it in. most of the time i can do it just fine in my driveway, but next time i do any suspension or exhaust work, id much rather pay $80 to get a hoist for a few hours
