Noob starting a blog for money

Hi all, I'm asking this for a friend of mine, now he isn't new to blogging, however starting a blog is different.
He has started looking to make money through blogging via affiliates, etc.
So first thing He did was looked through blogging hosts where he could make money. He chose Blogger. He just wanted to get some feedback about using blogger. Also can anyone tell me what the benefits are of using a host and creating their own website/domain?

Any feedback is helpful please.

Thanks

Using an independent webhost and running your own blogging software (ie. wordpress) has benefits of the ability to have a more customized design/look of your layout as well as having more powerful add-on modules that you or the user may use. However if your friend is a noob, there really isnt any point to going to a custom solution when he/she does not know how to properly set it up and use it. The key to driving traffic and making money to any website is the abundance of quality content. Good luck!

If you are going to start a blog, choose a domain name with the keywords in it, it helps you get ranked up higher in google. For example, if you search "apply for mortgages online" in google, the website http://www.ApplyFor-MortgagesOnline.com will be #1, which will give you more organic and natural website traffic, increasing the value of your website/domain.

Haven't had alot of experience using hosted blogs, but i would presume the only difference would be the features that they offer, free/paid, and etc. However for a basic blog, I don't forsee the need for many complex features. Moreover, once you get familiar and "growout" of your current blog, you may always transfer to a custom solution which isnt alot more trouble.
