BMW E92 vs R171 SLK Hey, I was deciding on getting one of the two, but not too sure. Any input from people who own one? or pros/cons, hoping for some opinions, reliability issues etc. My other choice was getting a g35 coupe, how is it in comparison to the latter? thanks for your time! |
G35 vs the other two is like night and day difference in terms of pricing. E92 gets my vote SLk is way too small unless u are below 6 feet than...may...be? |
imo, the slk is a chick's car. the steering is very vague (as per every other non-amg benz), brakes are too soft. slk 350 is pretty fast tho. it's also not the most reliable... my buddy's car had his driver's side doorlocks replaced 2 times, and there was this one time where it was on 'limp mode' for the whole day--took it in for an inspection and tweaked the transmission ecu and it was fine. his battery also died on him around 2 times. the facelifted e92 should be out by the end of this year. perhaps you can get a good deal on pre-facelift models. 335 is very fast, but beware of the well known HFPF problem and cooling issues with the engine. easily tuneable. looks better than the slk imo. you can also consider a G37 coupe. looks great, goes fast, and costs thousands less than a 335i. |
Theirs a lot of models for E92's and SLK's...which one specifically are you talking about? |
E92 because it has twin turbo |
are you buying used or new? it's hard to compare a 4 seater and a 2 seater imo not enough info |
BMW is more lux and sporty but at the same time g35 is lighter to save abit more gas...you be the judge |

http://www.bmwblog.com/2010/01/02/tw...ign-explained/ my vote's for G37 in general for overall reliability over the latter, atleast it won't have highpressure fuel pump, low pressure fuel pump, injector problems, amongst other things. As a side note: turbo BMW's do not like ethanol, not even 1%. |
g37 has overheat issue |
one question, does it have turbo? I personally prefer E92, smooth and practical. Love the rear seat room, good on gas especially 328i form. available with awd, and timeless styling. Judging by your comparison with the slk, i'm guessing the 328i is enough performance for you. |
i think the g37 looks wider and more aggressive and more luxury the e92 non-m3 looks kinda outdated already |

Mercedes sucks at making good A/C, I read about people get bad AC pump after 50K km. Mine is going away as well. Other than that, I am just paying oil change and gas money. |
asians come in 6'2?? wow...tats a rare sight to see! no joke im 6' btw |
give a look at a g37. it may be more expensive than the other cars if you are looking at used ones but I think the g37 is a good car to compare with the e92. |
thanks for all the input, sorry my question was a little vague, since I wasnt decided on which model slk/e92 to get. Most likely if I were to get one however, it would be a used one. Comparing these cars is a little weird yeah, but those were some of the cars I would have chosen. I already drive a 330i e90 thats my dads, but was planning to buy my own car. I think the g37 is pretty much out of my price range atm, so best I could get is a g35. |
E92 is the sexiest car out there! |

Check out the latest C&D.. They did a comparo on the IS350C, A5, G37, 335i (all convertibles).. The pre-facelifted SLK looks nicer than the new one. I think the new bumper looks retarded. It's more of a cruiser than anything else. The manual tranny was a total let down in my opinion. I felt my Mazda6 had a better shifter. The engine on the 328i is smooth, but you won't get head-snapping acceleration like you would on a 335i. I think you might have meant the G37, but the G35 is fairly dated.. but still a nice cruiser.. Do your research on the 05-06 engines, and make sure there's still warranty on it.. Good luck! I'm looking for a 2 seater convertible myself.. The TT-S was in my crosshair too until I realized the DSG is standard! grrr.. |
i love the SLK. 3er verts are everywhere. |
