| Opinions on the following convertibles...
Oh hai,
I've been thinking of getting a convertible as a fun weekend car for the last 2 years. The insane amounts of sun that we get in Kelowna allows me to justify getting one.
The contenders:
2006-2007 Z4-M ($28k+ USD, US built so no duties)
2009+ MX-5 (facelifted, with the powered-hardtop) ($24k+ USD + duties)
2005-2007 S2K ($18k USD + duties)
I've narrowed it down to these three cars. Price wise, the S2K is the cheapest, while the Z4-M is obviously the most expensive. The MX-5 sits somewhere in the middle. FYI, I will be buying it from the states.
It will be a highway cruiser for the most part for May-August driving from Kelowna to Vancouver. I've read that the S2K has the worst seats for long-distance cruising. IMHO, I've only had time with a NC MX5, and I felt the seats were really comfy (driving from Vancouver to Whistler), and I did not feel like I was in a sardine can. (I'm 5'9" ~158lbs BTW).
The car will most likely be stock.. MAYBE rims + coilovers in the future..
Which one would you pick?
For those that own one of these cars, can you comment on how much you spent on maintenance/repairs?

I would pick s2k, but thats because i was planning on getting one last year
I wouldnt buy a BMW because of parts/maintenance cost, and Miata because it doesnt have as much power

if it's normal Z4, then get a S2K
since you mentioned M...then that's the only choice

maintenance costs on BMWs are very high -- even windshield washer blades are $70-80 (I have an M3)
For what you are looking for -- I think the S2K is the best choice. Lightweight, fast, well balanced

I've thought about the regular Z4 3.0si too (they're only $20k ish), but I really dislike the front bumper! I guess I can buy a Z4-M bumper.
The MX5 is in the group because it's actually a decent interior with the top-up while cruising. It's definitely much quieter than the S2k, and well you won't get your softtop slashed! The older bubbly MX5 looks girly, but the NC-facelifted looks pretty good in a dark colour combined with a black interior.
The S2K is bloody loud both with the top up and down! I don't think I can live with that while driving for 3hrs each way!
I had originally included the SLK350 6spd manual on the list too.. Having driven one, I think I enjoy driving the MX5 more than the SLK.. That might be just me though..

miata...has like..... barely 170hp
the rest of the cars u listed either has greater hp or actual torque to back it up
than again im just hating on the miata for being gutless

I'd pick the Z4-M simply because it has a lot more hp/torque than the others, and for highway driving that's probably what you want.
I have an s2k, and you're right - it's loud all the time, but you get used to it The only maintenance costs I've had so far are just regular oil changes. I had to replace the wiper blades too but they were like $20 for oem's.

I dont like the looks of the SLK at all.. It's way too chic-looking.. If anything, it looks more feminine than a facelifted NC MX-5 .. The SLK55 looks a lot meaner, but I'm not willing to rock an auto..

You should do more research on it. Driving experience on s2k and MX-5 are sure different from Z4M.

It's crazy how a couple of local dealerships are importing Z4 2.5s for < $20k usd and are listing it here for $33k+ CDN.. The currency is on par, and there's no duties to be paid on these cars!
I wouldn't call the MX5 a bitch's car, especially with the face-lift. It's not 'fast,' but it is extremely fun to toss around the city and on highways.
If I really needed this car to pimp hoes, I'd sell my MPS6 and pick up a used SL63 or a 997 C2!

Sometimes I really hate Mugen_evolution's replies. I wish he was still banned. Anyway, I'd choose the Mx5 for it's practically and fun factor in the city and highway where you'll use it the most. Posted via RS Mobile |
