| unbearable road noise from car
Hey guys,
I have a g35 on stock 19 rays and bridgestone tires. I was running winter tires previously with no real issues. I put my summer tires back on and the car is making ALOT of noise when driving. It becomes really bad when slowing down/braking and taking turns. It seems to be coming from the tires/wheels as it still makes a bit of noise at faster speeds. It almost sounds and feels like your in a train.
The whole dashboard even rattles when im slowing down. Could non-balanced tires do this? To make a long story short i got my tires put on by advance motorsports (when the "good guys" left) and got my rims all scratched up because of their terrible workmanship. Bastards!
I honestly dont trust that my tires/wheels were balanced properly. There are like five 1/2 ounce weights attached on one wheel, and 3-4 on each other of the inside part of the wheels. I usually remeber there being one or two weights at most. I also notice that one of the rear wheels it looks like one of them came off (there are 2 in a row, a missing space, and one more). I checked some of the weights and they seem a bit loose to me.
Im deciding on whether to go to the dealership and get them to road test the vehicle (warranty runs out in a few weeks) - I have done an oil test and 21 point inspection recently, OR to go and get the wheels balanced again at a different shop.
What do you think the problem is? what should I do?
Thanks

If your car is still under warranty, definitely get the dealership to road test the vehicle. I'm sure they can help you a lot more in person than random people over the internet.

i would just rebalance the tires. weights always end up on different parts of the inner barrel of your rims when you balance them.
also check your tire pressure (though i doubt that's the problem).

steering wheel shaking when braking is warped rotors issue.
if the wheel is unbalanced, or the weights have fallen off, then you will notice a shake in the wheel at certain speeds. it becomes really noticable at 80km/h and 110 km/h.
5 1/2oz weights on 1 wheel isnt bad. depending on the wheel, and offset, and width, you can use as much as 6oz's to correct the balance. also, if the wheel has a slight bend (still good for driving) u need weights to counter balance it.
i suggest getting them rebalanced. on not so new wheels, dirt gets on the surface of the barrel making any weights hard to stick on. go to the wheel and tire section, i stuck a thread on where to get low pro tires and big wheels properly mounted and balanced. Quote:

it really depends on how many weights you need.
if say ur off as much as 6oz on one point edge of the wheel, you may need to stack the weights on top of each other to compensate. if you just put them in a line, then instead of the weights being on that one pin point, they are spread out along the side of that part of the wheel. this means once u spin again to see if its correctly balanced, all those weights still wont be enough cuz all its weight is spread out. Well it is obviously related to your wheel/tires as you had no problems with the winter set.
Did you change just the tires? or the rim AND tire as an assembly?
Is it happening at all speeds? Low and high speeds?
Take it to get balanced, you'll find somethings related to your problems, bent wheel, seperated tires, or unbalanced tires. That's your best option.

get them rebalanced. weights fall off if the drum was dirty or had caked on dirt and thus the weights cant stick on properly. Quote:

make sure ALL your lug nuts are on tightly!!
had something similar happen to me before.. the damn shop that mounted my tires onto my rims did a reallly shitty job.
i could literally loosen the lug nuts with my fingers!
they were causing my car to make LOTS of noise and shake/vibrate
i kept getting out of my car to check if there was a rock stuck in between my tire treads or something, but there wasn't.
called up my buddy who's a mechanic and he told me to check lug nuts. *bingo*

If you had your winter tires taken off the rims and summers put back on the same rims, they didn't balance your tires, get that shop to fix their mistake.

Update:
I came back from the dealership today. Tech came with me on a roadtest (an angry old man that didnt say much). He drove it a bit up the street and said your tires are shot. They told me I need to replace my tires.
The tires are wearing out on the outside more than the inside (which i find strange - its usually the inside?). The service guy came out and measured it with the thread thing and its like 3/32 on the outside and 7/32 on the inside. The car is bone stock and not lowered. Im assuming the alignment must be off - looking at the tires myself they do look worn a bit on the outsides. I mentioned to them that some of the wheel weights appear to have fallen off but the tech said the car would shimmy if the balance was off. There is only one wheel weight left on one of the rear tires now - Im sure there was at least three last time i checked.
I bought the car with 8,500km in september 2009. The car is now at ~45,000km. the winter tires were on for about 12K which means these stock bridgestones have only had 33,000KM put on them and they already need replacing!! Is this normal for a stock G35?
Im kinda worried if this continues to happen - I will need to buy summer tires almost every year, which seems ridiculous to me. I was quoted 1700 dollars for news ones at the dealership (obviously I will not buy them from there).
I was thinking of going to Dales and getting an alignment done. Not sure if that will help now.
Any other G35 owners having problems with tire wear? This car is starting to hurt my wallet.
Alex i just saw your post - maybe I'll get you guys to take a look. I was planning to come down to get some spacers for my wheels anyways. What are your hours? Are you guys open on Victoria day?
