Is this car stolen?

Hi guys,

Found a car on craigslist recently that I am thinking about buying, but it sounds stolen to me.

Said his friend sold him a Pathfinder that broke down immediately after purchase. So instead of giving him his money back, gave him this Civic - and now they don't talk anymore.

So he has no vehicle history on the engine swap or anything really. Asked him for a VIN and he hasn't got back to me yet.

What do you guys think?

Well he can only sell the car if he is the legal registered owner otherwise he won't be able to fill out the paperwork. So I wouldn't worry about it.

If he's not the legal registered owner then he is no position to transfer the title anyways so you can't buy it.

Berz out.

Ah I just noticed something in that Ad. Its a 2000 civic and that means it needs to be OBD scanned for aircare, ask the guy if its aircared or not. Could be a hassle getting that thing to pass and thats why its being sold. That B16B motor swap and tranny alone is worth a few thousand though so not a bad price overall if it indeed has 4 wheel Brembo's on it.

its OBD2 - he said something about it not passing aircare.

Aren't there ways of registering stolen cars to yourself?

There was a story of this teacher in Calgary who bought a stolen car off ebay and drove it for 3 years before the police came and took it away.

No you can't register it yourself... well you could if your forged the signatures but that would come back to you in the end.

The car is supposed to be OBD2 and if the swap was done poorly there are going to be sensors that are not in the car anymore making the scan test fail every time. If you fail the scan test, you no pass you no insure.

Check his DL info against the registration and make sure the VIN is the same on the Reg. as it is on the car.

Also use the reg. or VIN # to check the Aircare history (maybe it passed after the swap before but is just failing now or maybe it's never passed after the swap).

The licence plate doesn't come back as "stolen" on CPIC, but those are some pretty bad/generic photos to begin with. Make sure you get the VIN and check it on CPIC as well as better photos/check it out in person before deciding on buying it.

Seems rare that someone would try to sell a stolen car with plates on CL.

But not rare to take images of a similar car and use those in the ad. In Richmond, we've dealt with several robberies where the seller was jumped for the car & his money, as well as the buyer jumped for the money. All contact originated from Craigslist ads.

Aircare has no results for this VIN. (HGEJ635XYH007284)

he said somthing about "territory z".

Some loophole? Anyone know what this means?

It could mean that the car was never insured in an area within the Aircare-required boundaries. Somebody could correct me on this.

HAHA it means he lied to ICBC and if the car ever got in an accident it would be void insurance. Territory Z means you drive the car OUT OF BC for 3 weeks out of the month.

Its a lie and a loophole and IF anything ever happens to the car, your not covered AND you could be charged with Fraud....

I was right in my previous post that this car will never pass aircare due to the OBD2 scan procedure.

Would be a great car if you lived out of the lower mainland though.

Yup, last person had it insured where Aircare isn't required

It won't matter really your main issue is going to be insuring it and getting through or around aircare. The proper territory you should use is X I think and thats for people that work out of the lower mainland for 5 days a week or more. If you have an address on the island or out of the lower mainland you could use that to insure it but again if anything happens to the car and ICBC looks into it, and they do, your fucked.

Or if you really wanted to you could buy it, swap in a stock y7 or y8 with all the sensors, and aircare it. Once its aircared then you can put the B back in... Thats about all you can do.
