if you're paying full price for the phone, why would they lock it? |
i seriously doubt its legal for your provider to LOCK your phone if you purchased it unlocked. |

http://modmyi.com/forums/iphone-news...e-iphones.html According to this article, an unlocked commitment-free iPhone 4 will be $649 for the 16GB and $749 for the 32GB. |
strangely i want an unlocked phone but wont pay extra for one. i can easily BUY a new unlocked POS phone in whatever country im visiting and get a prepaid sim for less than paying the premium for an unlocked iphone. however it would be nice not to worry about Apple's constant FW updates that kill jailbreaks and unlocks. well jb's may still be in peril |
For me this is good news. I am still in contract from the iPhone 3G. I probably won't be eligible for a discount, so I was going to pay full price anyway. This news is just sugar coating for me because I can now have an unlocked phone. When I am eligible for HUP, then I can sell the sealed iPhone on craigslist anyway. |

ya that's the bad thing bout JB is that you have to do each update. BUTTT the benefits are oh so niiiiicee. free apps? oh yaaa! |
well currently jailbreaking a 3G or 3GS (3.1.2 fw or lower) is a 1 click job. if you can plug your phone into the pc and turn it on, i think you can handle jailbreaking it. unlock your phone for free. you need a wireless network to do this: -goto www.blackra1n.com click the windows icon. download blackra1n.exe to your pc - connect your iphone to pc, (make sure iTunes is off) run blackra1n.exe, hit the "make it rain" button. wait for your phone to reboot. -turn on your wifi. hit the blackra1n icon on your phone. (black water drop) -select "cydia" it will install then probably reboot your phone, -hit the blackra1n icon again on your phone then choose "snow" this will unlock your phone. if you have issues with wifi after just reboot your phone. you now have a jailbroken and unlocked phone for free. |
^^^ I think it has more to do with paying $800-950 for an iPhone over 3 years than the hassle of unlocking it. |

Also what's the different with all the ra1n's and sn0w's and shit. That's the confusing thing. |
blackrain and sn0w isnt great if your iphone dies and needs reset, then the phone could brick and require a restore spirit is currently the best jailbreak app out there, sadly no unlock |

I think flashing the baseband fw is how you unlock the phone and it can be updated to the most recent one. Usually its with any new firmware release from apple. Meaning updating the phone would also update the baseband which would relock it. But don't quote me on that. I'm not entirely sure but that's how I understood how it worked. Hopefully they give us canadians a release date soon. Can't wait to get one. Posted via RS Mobile |
if you guys wondering why iphone isnt launching in canada at the same time as the us, this the reason. It's also the 1 reason and only reason i like Quebec lol: http://www2.publicationsduquebec.gou...e=2009C51A.PDF Hay Fido/Rogers Customers The reason why the iphone 4 is not launching in Canada on June 24th is due to Quebec Bill 60 that becomes law on June 30th. Because of Bill 60, every carrier operating in Quebec will have to create new Terms and Conditions for their Quebec subscribers. This Bill will set rules on how carriers must deal with their Quebec customers. Some of the new rules that Quebec customers will see 1)Starting June 30th, In a Quebec advertisement, carriers must display the full cost of the plan including SAF/911.GRRF fees in the price of their advertisement. Example $40 cityfido plan will be displayed as $40.40 plan. 2)Starting June 30th, Any Quebec customer who activates service with agreement or renewals their agreement must be provided a written copy that contains the cost for every service a carrier can charge this customer. The cost of these services can't change for the duration of the contract. 3)Starting June 30th, no more 30 days notice. Quebec customers who wants to cancel their service will have their service cancelled immediately once the call ends with the CSR or if the customer ports out. 4)Starting June 30th, Quebec customers will not pay any administrative fees for non payment or rejected payment. 5)Starting June 30th, Quebec customers who want to cancel their service before the end of the term will be charged.... the hardware subsidy received x the number of month remaining divided by how many month is the agreement length. Example: say a Quebec customer got 16GB iphone 3GS for $199 on 3Y term on June 19, 2009. The retail price of 16GB iphone 3GS is $699. So this customer received $500 hardware subsidy from their carrier. Now this customer wants to cancel their line. This customer has 24 month remaining on their contract. (500 x 24 month) divided by 36 month = The ECF in this example will be $336.67 +tax. These 5 rules are some of the new rules that will come into play on June 30th for Quebec customers. To have a smooth Canadian iphone 4 launch, Apple and Rogers/Telus/Bell agreed to delay the the launch of the new iphone 4 because they didn't want to create rules for 6 days that they would have to change on June 30th. So all parties agreed that it was in their best interest for all carriers to be ready for the new Quebec law without having a major iphone launch to deal with. Every CSR who handles Quebec customers, Store Rep in Quebec must be retrained on the new rules. I don't think any carrier wants a CSR in a training class when thousand of customers are on hold waiting to speak with a CSR to see if they can qualify to get iphone 4. If it wasn't for this new Quebec Law, the Canadian iphone 4 launch would have been on June 24 like the Americans. I can guarantee you this. now if only this would be passed to the rest of canada we'd have a normal telecom industry =/ |

Spirit is only for 3.1.3 IIRC so i have never used it. however i think the Apple store is now selling unlocked 3Gs phones so the unlock issue may be moot. |
lol just a heads up for those with fido.. they are no longer doing APN block... so i'd be careful if i'm using an iphone with them ~ coz i don't think there's an option to block data ~ only data roaming~ i'm not sure with the other carriers too. and existing ppl that already have their APN blocked.. i'd call to make sure it's still blocked.. just in case |
If you're using an iphone why would you not want to have data? What is the point? Just use a regular phone :lol Anyway, if you want to 'block' your data, just change the APN to some random word. It won't connect after that. |
